CyberLink unveils world’s first hardware-accelerated 4K Ultra-HD player

CyberLink, a leading developer of multimedia software, has introduced the industry’s first media player that can take advantage of hardware acceleration capabilities of ultra-high-definition video decoding found in the latest hardware, such as microprocessors and graphics processing units.

The CyberLink PowerDVD 15 is the world’s first software player that supports hardware accelerated decoding of H.265/HEVC (high efficiency video coding) video streams. The latest CPUs and GPUs from Intel Corp. and Nvidia Corp. integrate special-purpose hardware that accelerates decoding of ultra-high-definition HEVC video in up to 4K (3840*2160) resolutions. According to CyberLink, usage of such hardware results in an average reduction in CPU loading of 63 per cent, and prevents the PC from hanging or stuttering. For 4K ultra HD video, PowerDVD delivers sublimely smooth, lag-free playback through smart buffering technology, the developer claims.

In addition to enhanced 4K and H.265 video support, the new PowerDVD 15 player also supports direct playback of Blu-ray and DVD ISO files, an intelligent playback algorithm for 120fps and 240fps video files, advanced upscaling and so on.

The PowerDVD Ultra comes with a 20GB of storage on CyberLink Cloud for one year, allowing users to upload, download, and even stream video to any PC with PowerDVD, or to any mobile device with Power Media Player.

CyberLink’s PowerDVD 15 starts at $59.95.

KitGuru Says: For some reason, CyberLink did not enable hardware acceleration of HEVC 4K UHD video playback that is supposed to be incorporated into AMD’s “Carrizo” accelerated processing units. Nonetheless, the fact that CyberLink has added support for Intel’s and Nvidia’s HEVC accelerators is a clear evidence that 4K ultra HD is gaining importance nowadays.

  1. What about Dolby atmos decoding? I was hoping this would be possible with powerdvd but it doesn’t seem so. There aren’t many media players that support 3D bluray playback and for people with a PC in their media room Dolby atmos decoding to analogue is a really needed feature.
