Nintendo: Modern game consoles are dull, Nintendo NX will surprise you!

Nintendo Wii U game console has failed to become popular and gamers nowadays prefer more advanced Microsoft Xbox One as well as Sony PlayStation 4. Nintendo has already confirmed development of the next-generation gaming system, but disclosed no details about it. In a recent interview the president of the company implied that the firm has not changed its attitude towards system design, which means that the Nintendo NX will differ from other consoles.

Both Nintendo Wii and Nintendo Wii U offered unique experiences impossible on competing gaming platforms: the former had motion-sensing controllers, whereas the latter featured a special gamepad with a built-in display. Neither of the consoles featured leading-edge graphics or general purpose processing capabilities, but unique experiences they provided brought in different results for the company. The Wii has managed to become the best-selling console among those released in the mid 2000-s, but the Wii U is a clear failure that is behind both PS4 and XBO in terms of unit sales.

While both Microsoft and Sony traditionally increase processing horsepower of their consoles in order to boost quality of graphics, create better games and enable new services, Nintendo plans to go another way again. Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo believes that modern game consoles – PlayStation 4 and Xbox One – are dull and his company’s next-gen system will actually surprise players.

“In the past few years, the idea of what [encompasses] a gaming platform gradually changed,” said Mr. Iwata in an interview with Nikkei, reports Kotaku. “However, if you only expand upon existing hardware, it is dull. In some shape or form, we are always thinking about how we want to surprise players as well as our desire to change each person’s video gaming life.”

Mr. Iwata agrees that major changes between platforms alienate some users and it becomes increasingly hard for the company to sustain its success throughout different generations of hardware. However, the president of Nintendo has always expressed point of view that his company should not directly compete against rivals like Sony and Microsoft, which is why the company has to offer something others do not. As a result, alienation of existing customers [because of significant changes between platforms] is a natural risk for Nintendo, which the company is willing to take.

Earlier this month Nintendo confirmed that it had started development of its new game console, which is currently called Nintendo NX. Previously it was reported that key elements of the platform if the NX, such as microprocessor and graphics processing unit, will be developed in the U.S.

KitGuru Says: From Mr. Iwata’s comments it is pretty obvious that Nintendo will continue to concentrate on unique things and will try to avoid direct competition against rivals. However, executives do not always show the whole picture when they speak to the public. Eventually it may turn out that the company is working on a true high-definition video game system more powerful than Xbox One and PlayStation 4. But Nintendo NX is due in 2017. Probably, a year or two before Microsoft and Sony may roll-out their next-gen consoles…

I’m loving my Wii U. As much or more so than my PS4. The Wii U just has so many top notch quality games and the best and smoothest graphics I’ve seen. Super Mario 3d world has to be the most underrated game of all time.

I don’t own a console but I have thought about buying the Wii U for casual gaming. To me the games on it look more fun and a better experience than what the rivals can offer. I always have my Pc for gaming and most title on other systems come to Pc too. The Wii U OS a very underrated system in my view.

They really are 🙂 The Wii U Offers a really fun and unique experience that both pc, as well x1/ps4 can’t provide. Playstation and Xbox are just weak computers…but the Wii u is just…fun. Fun unique games with unique fun ways to play them. Nothing better than taking your wii u game pad and playing smash or mario kart while laying down in bed 🙂

  5. I’m sure many people grew up playing Nintendo’s consoles, although, I’ve always felt Nintendo to be the family, casual, party type of gaming. I don’t think they will ever be able to shake that off, they keep trying, but it never works. It’s a shame really because they really do want to compete with Microsoft and Sony, but like I said, it’s a casual gaming platform. I do however enjoy playing Nintendo games as they feel a lot more fun than the games on other platforms. Maybe that’s just me or nostalgia of my Mario filled childhood.

  6. They should release a VR gaming system. They already have the 3DS. Now with almost every other company making 3D headsets as accessories, Nintendo should release one as a console! You could slide games in the side or in a console/base that the headset wirelessly connects to. Plus they already have the Knunchucks from the Wii that could be the controllers for the VR. It’s too perfect. I would not be surprised if they do this considering all the hype with VR coming from Sony, Valve, Oculus, HTC, etc.. I bet Nintendo could pull it off nicely too.

  7. “The Wii U just has […] the best and smoothest graphics I’ve seen.”

Try looking harder. As in any exclusive on the PS4.

  8. May not be possible. VR runs at very high resolutions meaning it’d have to be a big beast console to run VR, and Nintendo tend to only use their own hardware, meaning they’d have to make a headset – considering how far Oculus and Valve are with development, Nintendo will be way behind the curve.

  9. “Fun unique games”

***mentions games that have been rehashed each generation since the 1990’s***

Ah, Nintendo fans. One of a kind.

  10. Matthew Sizemore

Well, the last of us remastered is suppose to be the best looking game on the PS4 which I finished, but Super Mario 3d World not only looks better but framerate is a smoother at steady 60fps. You guys buy into all the specs of a system to the point where you can’t see the reality, judge for yourself instead of going in thinking something based on what you’ve read. Of course most who like to argue against the Wii U have never even played one.

  11. Matthew Sizemore

Yeah, the kind that is the reason PS4 and Xbox One exists. Without us nintendo fans the gaming market would have been down the drain after the atari blunders sunk the market. Took Nintendo years to get Americans confidence in games built back up but Super Mario Bros done a damn good job doing just that.

  12. You think a remastered ps3 game is the best? Lol you’re eyes are broken. Go look at The Order or Driveclub. You Nintendo fans make daft comparisons and then argue jibberish.

  13. Fake

  14. What’s fake????

  15. When you talk about a game from the 90s which no one cares about anymore, I think we can say Nintendo is dying.

  16. “mentions games that have been rehashed since the 1990’s”

So nothing like say Call of Duty, which has been re-released with little to no changes almost every year since 2003.

Or Assasin’s Creed which has done the same since 2007.

  17. Yet both those games look damn progressive when compared to Nintendo games which have barely changed since the 90’s….

Also there’s more the xbox/ps than those games. Same cant be said about Nintendo which relies on rehashing the same games as they haven’t had 3rd party since the n64.

  18. By “look progressive” I’m assuming you mean they spent several million on their graphics budget. Otherwise one could say they are just rehashes of Goldeneye and the ocarina of time.
Given the choice of playing CoD:Black/Ghosts/whatever they’re pushing now with 3 mates or Mario Kart 8, I know which one I’d pick in a heartbeat. And that in a nutshell is the point of Nintendo, they’re not there to to have the biggest and flashiest. They provide the most fun. Look at the sales figures for the last generation of consoles and tell me they don’t have a point.

  19. Considering CoD and Assassin’s Creed are nothing like Golden Eye or Zelda, what the fuck are you talking about? Mario Karts however has barely changed since the SNES, and same applies for Smash Bros, and Super Mario Bros.

Of course you’d choose Nintendo, you’re clearly a fanboy. Nintendo exists to bleed the wallets of kids who want to live in the past and play their first party titles until one of them dies. That’s the reason the Wii U has failed, because it offers nothing to people who aren’t interested in their rehashed first party titles.

You don’t have a point – the Wii sold because casuals bought it for sports and party games. Now they collect dust and no one gives a shit about the Wii U.

I want to play a video game, not a simulation, or watch an interactive movie, a video game, I think all consoles have it’s place, but if you want to either troll this board, or get butthurt over someone’s thoughts on Nintendo then why are you even on this board? @mazty:disqus

  21. What the hell? Since when was something like Bloodbourne< Destiny, GTA V or DriveClub "simulations" or "interactive films"? Try playing some of the games you bash before talking bollox, because you're the blatant troll here.

  22. Call Of Duty: A first person shooter with an acclaimed multiplayer mode
Golden Eye: A first person shooter with an acclaimed multiplayer mode

Assassins Creed: 3rd person action adventure game where you explore a massive open world while running errands for various npc’s, or killing various targets
Ocarina of Time: 3rd person action adventure game where you explore a massive open world while running errands for various npc’s or killing various targets

Of course I like Nintendo, I have a sense of humor and enjoy some craic. I also like my PC and Xbox 360.

Agreed, the Wii U is a complete failure, though I dissagree with you on the Wii collecting dust. Mine sees regular usage pretty much any time some mates are over

  23. asiansensation_7

Haha, I have all the consoles, and I play Bloodborne not Bloodbourne religiously, and I love Destiny, and GTA V, I played DriveClub and it was bad, and The Order 1886 was literally a 5 hour game with half of the game being cutscenes, if you want to talk about someone who knows games, than you can talk to me. Stop bashing Nintendo, get off the board if all your going to do is talk down to Nintendo Players. You seem like you are just trying to get reactions out of everyone on here, what is your goal? You don’t really seem to have one that I can see just you talking to yourself, and me about how much you love Sony, and hate Nintendo.

  24. Well, to be fair, if I’d buy a console now, it might be a Wii U (got the pc for all highly produced games). But the problem is that all it has to offer are Nintendo exclusives. Because it is a failed console – i.e. its sales are no less than a disaster – it is a less interesting platform to publish on for major developers. If you want something else, there is little to choose from, and I’m not buying a console for one developer.

  25. So then if you have all those games, why did you call them simulations and interactive films? And since when did I love Sony? Dumbass.

  26. asiansensation_7

because that’s what the Order 1886 was, and DriveClub is a driving simulator. You named those two I was giving you an opinion, and for DriveClub a fact. Why are you still on this board, I’m not trying to make you angry just wondering why you want to initiate fights with Nintendo Gamers?

  27. So every game that isn’t Nintendo is like The Order 1886? No, it’s not. DriveClub is not a simulator – nice one on showing you’re a child who has never sat in an actual driving seat before. I’m just pointing out how what you said is utter drivel. Maybe you should think a little before talking crap?

  28. asiansensation_7

You are taking everything I am saying out of context, I really don’t have time to discuss with you how I don’t think those games are bad, and how Nintendo doesn’t always make good games. I think they rehash a lot, but I still like them because they do it in the right fashion. So why again, are you on this board?

  29. Thats a real screen shot of the order game bro so not fake

  30. It also depends which exclusive games you like some prefer Nintendo other Xbox one and other Ps4 and finally best one of all PC MOTHER FUCKING MASTER RACE FOR LIFE PEOPLE LIKE ME

  31. All I know is that I miss games like they had for the N64, (Conker’s Bad Fur Day Anyone?). I also would like a light controller, the Wii U’s controller is too heavy for me for long game play. I would like to look at my t.v., not my lap. If I wanted to play a hand held game, I’d use my iPad, phone, or buy a 3DS, and the handheld market is already saturated. Of course many many more games, I’m so dissapointed in the Wii U’s selection. Wish I never bought it. Nintendo do you hear me?!? lol

  32. Yes, I believe that the PS4 and Xbox One have far superior graphics to the Wii U. It’s the lack of all that detail that make the nintendo games run so much more smoothly. Also, the PS4 and Xbox have some family friendly games. Definitely not as much as Nintendo but they do have some. Also, I really love Assassins Creed 3 in my WII U

  33. No im not, you just made a bad point and a showed you that. You clearly came on here looking for a fight – some guy tried to claim the Wii U has better graphics than the ps4, I showed him he was wrong, but you’re trying to defend him …

  34. That’s the most retarded comparison I’ve ever read. You’ve just taken elements from the genre and then claimed they’re the same game, which is clearly ludicrous.
Gran Turismo: you drive vehicles around a track
Mario Kart: you drive vehicles around a track

    Smash bros: Mario hits stuff
Mario world: Mario hits stuff SAME GAME!!!!

Above shows how daft your comparisons are.

  35. asiansensation_7

I wasn’t defending him if you look back at my comments, I never once said the Wii U has superior graphics, the game system was a flop, but I still love it. It’s a good game system for Nintendo games, if you like Nintendo then buy it, I’m not saying everyone should get it, but I feel they make more of a pure gaming experience with minimal cutscenes, but the games are rehashed like I said. Now if you want to prove me wrong in what I said show me specifically where I said the Wii U has better graphics, and then I will literally stop debating with you.

  36. “I want to play a video game, not a simulation, or watch an interactive movie”

That’s what you said. You came in here arguing absolute crap. Go away kid, you clearly just want to argue.

  37. asiansensation_7

Where in there does it say the game has bad graphics?

  38. Amongst the bullshit. You came here to fight – go be a douchebag else where.

I’d like to show you how “daft” you are.

  40. Guess what you forgot to do – show me how I was being daft…Whereas you seemed to imply that any game that isn’t Nintendo is either a simulation or interactive movie.

“because that’s what the Order 1886 was, and DriveClub is a driving simulator. You named those two I was giving you an opinion, and for DriveClub a fact. Why are you still on this board, I’m not trying to make you angry just wondering why you want to initiate fights with Nintendo Gamers?”
If you want to review it mazty than go right ahead it clearly says that DriveClub is a driving simulator, and the Order 1886 is an interactive movie. If you keep bringing up the same facts I’ll keep giving you the same answers. Now where in there does it say that every game that isn’t Nintendo made is a sim, or a movie? I also want you to know everyone is probably finding us a bit immature.

  42. Thinking DriveClub is a simulator shows your a silly little kid who has never driven before, or even played DriveClub. It doesn’t handle like a driving sim at all. The Order is an interactive movie, but it’s not the only game on the PS4 is it? Look at Second Son, Killzone or a whole swarm of indie games to realise that saying they are all either sims or interactive films is utter, utter shit.

I really couldn’t care less what others think 🙂

  43. I never claimed they were the same game, my exact statements were, “One could say they are just rehashes of Goldeneye and the ocarina of time”
To which you replied “Considering CoD and Assassin’s Creed are nothing like Golden Eye or Zelda, what the fuck are you talking about?”
I then elaborated briefly on how they are alike. Problem?

  44. Saying they are rehashes by naming common features found in genres is absurd. That’s like saying Golden Eye is just a rehash of Doom.

  45. Almost as absurd as saying that Super Mario Galaxy is a rehash of Super Mario 64? Or that Windwaker is a rehash of Majora’s Mask?

  46. People rightfully complain that there’s little difference between games like CoD and their sequels. Considering Nintendo games have a generation between them, they have barely changed over the last 20(!!!!) years. Go look at Metal Gear and see how that’s evolved. Or final fantasy. Heck, go look at The Elder Scrolls series.

  47. Nintendo probably is the most progressive game company. They may use the same characters, but each game in their series gains new mechanics, or mixes them together to make it new.

  48. So progressive it spits out the same game every generation with minor alterations. That’s being lazy, not progressive. When did Nintendo last make something that could be truly called original?

  49. Well, Pikmin and smash Bros. come to mind instantly. And admittedly they might not have changed those particular games series, Mario (despite having way too many spinoffs,) had evolved immensely going from 2-D to 3-D to gravity based planet hopping, and then back to 2-D for nostalgia’s sake. That’s one example. You know what, they don’t make enough new game series, I’ll give you that.

  50. You end your comment with the important factor – they haven’t made anything new in years. So if you’re not into colourful and comical games, you won’t be into Nintendo. Sony has it right by covering all genres and audiences – Nintendo needs to branch out to new audiences.

  51. Well, they are a company that makes colorful and comical games. So naturally, that’s what their games look like.

  52. Which is why they can’t be called progressive because they aren’t stepping outside of their comfort zone, and haven’t for going on 25 years.

  53. I do 99% of all my gaming on PC simply because it has far better multiplatform games and far more varied/unique or interesting games than consoles do. It also manages to run every game at 60fps which is important to me as 30fps is a horrible compromise that effects controls and visuals.

With that being said I love my WiiU. I love Bayonetta 1+2, Mario 3D World, Zelda, Metroid, Captain Toad, Hyrule Warriors etc. The other poster gloated about Drive Club while attacking Nintendo but Drive Club is nothing but turd to me, also what hardcore gamer wants to play racing games at 30fps with less responsive controls?.

So as a PC gamer I think Nintendo should be praised that Mario Kart runs at 60fps while looking stunning. I am also looking forward to Xenoblade.

I also have an XB1 but never use it, I bought it for Halo MCC and Sunset OD

I still don’t own a PS4 and the way things are going I may never bother with one as there is nothing of interest to me, so much so I find it hilarious that someone would bitch at people for enjoying Nintendo while name dropping turd of the highest calibre like The Order or Drive Club????
