iOS 8.2 adds non-removable Apple Watch app

Apple has begun rolling out the iOS 8.2 update in preparation for the launch of the Apple Watch next month. In order to set the stage for the new wearable, Apple has packed in a new Apple Watch app, that like most of the stock iOS apps, can't be removed.

This app will show up on the iPhone 5 or newer, as older iPhones aren't capable of pairing with the Apple Watch. The new app allows devices to pair up with the wearable and will let you keep track of activity data recorded by the Apple Watch.

Obviously if you don't plan to make use of the app, you can hide it in a folder along with the many other stock iOS apps you don't use, although it would be nice to be able to uninstall apps you have no use for, particularly on devices with low amounts of storage.

Beyond that, the update brings some improvements to the health kit app and fixes some stability and security issues. The update is being rolled out now and weighs in at 443MB.

KitGuru Says: Stock applications have never been removable on iOS without jailbreaking so this news isn't all that surprising. Do you guys think Apple should make stock apps removable and available to download again later?

  1. Contacts, Compass, Voice memos, Passbook, iTunes store, Videos, Newsstand, Reminders, Game center, Health, Safari (I use the Chrome app), Stocks, Podcasts, and now this new watch app. I have never (and probably never will) use any of these, all they do is take up space on the device. I hate having to delete songs which I haven’t listened to in a while in order to make room for new ones, just because I can’t delete the stock apps!

  2. Another marketing stunt of apple i uses apple now switching coz apple is liar theyvsaid they takes care of privacy and they gave all iphone encryption keys to CIA and i wont spend 1000$ to spy on me
    Suckersssss

  3. you’ll love switching to android. we have two mail apps, two app stores, two browsers, two camera apps and a gazzilion OEM apps they try to shove up your ass. root your phone to get less bloat? – a great excuse to void your warranty. life sucks, get over it.

  4. The majority of phones don’t have two mail apps, or two browsers, or even two cameras apps pre-installed.
Also, contrary to popular belief, so long as your in the EU rooting shouldn’t even void your warranty

  5. My OnePlus One didn’t come with two mail apps, nor two app stores, nor two browsers, nor two camera apps, nor any OEM bloatware. Plus, it officially allows rooting to take even more control of MY device, similar to Sony. Really loving my post-iPhone era thus far (been almost 5 months now).
