League of Legends World Championships coming to Wembley Arena in London

We already know that eSports are becoming an increasingly big deal, even here in the UK, which is evidenced by the fact that the League of Legends World Championships Quarterfinals will take place at the Wembley Arena in London this year.

Riot just made its announcement for the League of Legends World Championship today, the huge tournament will be held in four stages in four different places. The group stages will take place from the 1st to the 4th of October at Le Dock Pullman in Paris. The Quarterfinals will then hit London from the 15th to the 18th of October at the massive SSE Wembley Arena.

The Semifinals will then move things to Brussels from the 24th to the 25th of October with the finals taking place on Halloween at the Mercedes-Benz arena in Berlin. Last year, the championships ended in Seoul, Korea, in a stadium filled with 40,000 spectators with 27 million viewers total online.

In the official announcement, Riot said: “Choosing locations for the 2015 World Championship was a complex and time-intensive process. We began our search in earnest over a year ago, looking for venues and cities that gave us enough flexibility to customize live esports experiences for fans in the seats, as well as creating entertaining backdrops for players watching along at home.”

KitGuru Says: Wembley Arena is pretty massive so I do wonder if Riot will be able to fill all of the seats for this event. That said, the popularity of eSports is constantly surprising me. What do you guys think of this? It is pretty crazy that a gaming event is taking place in such a huge arena here in the UK.
