Microsoft issues DMCA takedown for Halo Online mod

Russia is getting its own free to play version of Halo, titled ‘Halo Online’ based on a modified version of the Halo 3 engine in order to get the game running on lower end hardware. As you can imagine, modders have already got their hands on the files and have begun creating.

However, it looks like Microsoft isn’t too keen on the idea of having mods floating around for Halo Online, as the publisher issued a DMCA takedown notice for a modded launcher for the game, titled ‘ElDorito’.

The modded files were available on GitHub and were being worked on by a team of modders. The Takedown notice said:

“We have received information that the domain listed above, which appears to be on servers under your control, is offering unlicensed copies of, or is engaged in other unauthorized activities relating to, copyrighted works published by Microsoft”.

“The above copyright work(s) ElDorito is being made available for copying, through downloading, at the above location without authorization from the copyright owner or exclusive licensee”.

Since then, the mod’s progress has taken a hit. However, Microsoft hasn’t been so quick to takedown the actual Halo Online game files, which are currently available on Mega as a 2.1GB zip file.

KitGuru Says: Since Halo Online is a multiplayer only title, it is likely that Microsoft will be hard on the modding community. However, it would be nice to see what people can do with the Halo 3 engine.

  1. “Since then, the mod’s progress has taken a hit.” This didn’t slow them down at all. They’ve already picked it back up and are working on it from Gitlab.
