EA Frostbite Engineer wants games to require Win10/DX12 by 2016

EA’s technical director for the Frostbite engine, Johan Andersson, has expressed his hopes for the future EA games using the new engine. While it would be a bit of an aggressive move, Andersson would like to see Frostbite games requiring Windows 10 and DirectX 12 by the end of 2016.

Windows 10 launches later this year and will come equipped with support for the DirectX 12 API, which is due to bring significant performance gains to modern PC hardware while playing games.

Speaking on Twitter (Via: PCGamesN), EA’s Technical Director for the Frostbite engine said: “Would like to require Win10 & DX12/WDDM2.0 as a minspec for our holiday 2016 games on Frostbite, likely a bit aggressive but major benefits”

While the move would be a bit aggressive, everyone is going to have plenty of opportunity to upgrade to Windows 10 as Microsoft will be allowing Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users to upgrade for free. This would also help push the spread of DirectX 12 in mainstream titles.

KitGuru Says: EA requiring Windows 10 and DirectX 12 for Frostbite games during the holiday season of 2016 would be an aggressive push as that will likely include Battlefield 5. However, developers are going to need to push for the use of Direct X 12 for PC gaming to move forward anyways, so it actually sounds like a good idea. We need to push graphics technology forward and not remain stagnant for years.

KitGuru Games: Omni-movement culminates 30 years of FPS innovation

Black Ops 6 is officially here, bringing the innovative new Omni-movement system to the game. While on the surface a relatively simple change, I argue that Treyarch intimately studied DOOM and the past 30 years of first-person shooter evolution to craft one of the most satisfying gameplay systems yet.

Windows 10 is coming free to the vast majority of gamers, inclusive of which is DirectX 12 support. All DX11 graphics cards will have some sort of limited comaptibility for DX12, and all new graphics cards will be fully DX12 capable, The only people this is going to affect is people who can’t run EA’s games in the first place due to weak and old specs.

Don’t cry like a little bitch just because EA are the one’s saying it

After the Windows 8 debacle I can understand people having a problem with being forced to use DX12 (win 10 only) to play their favourite game. I for one am very sceptical about Windows 10 after being burnt with windows 8.

  3. Not completely true. My HD5770 is a DX11.0 card and it won’t support DX12. DX12 for AMD cards requires GCN, which means HD7000 series and up.
    It runs BF4 at 1366×768 MEDIUM/HIGH at 60FPS, it’s a straight beast of a card for being from low/mid-range 2010!

Doesn’t mean I don’t agree with this move, though. I’ll get a new GPU (and monitor) until this happens, the rest of my PC is already ready and technology has to move forward!

    gib dx12
