Super Talent unveils external SSD with USB 3.1, up to 750MB/s read speed

Super Talent Technology, a well-known producer of various NAND flash-based storage devices, has unveiled one of the world’s first external solid-state drives with USB 3.1 interface. The new product combines portable sizes, high storage capacities and very high performance.

The Super Talent USB 3.1 portable RAIDDrive consists of two M.2 SSDs within the enclosure that operate in RAID 0 mode (stripe). The USB 3.1 portable RAIDDrive supports read speeds up to 750MB/s and write speeds up to 700MB/s, which is extremely good for portable devices. Super Talent will offer multiple versions of the USB 3.1 portable RAIDDrive products with up to 1TB capacities.

The USB 3.1 Portable RAIDDrive can fit into a pocket and requires PCs with either USB 3.0 (5Gb/s) or USB 3.1 (10Gb/s) type-A ports. The drive is also compatible with USB 2.0, but such interconnection cannot take advantage of massive performance that the product offers.

The USB 3.1 Portable RAIDDrive will be showcased at Computex in Taipei, Taiwan. The new USB 3.1 external solid-state storage devices will hit the market later this year. Pricing is unknown, but it will depend on the costs of M.2 SSDs.

With USB 3.1 interconnect technology support, this one will likely be a long-lasting solution that will be compatible not only with current PCs, but also with future computers with USB type-C connectors (a new cable will be required).
