Minecraft patch fixes persistent server crashing bug

Mojang has finally patched out a two-year old security bug that would allow people with the know-how to crash Minecraft servers by forcing them out of memory or causing them to freeze. The patch came in response to a blog post written by coder, Ammar Asker.

The coder outlined a major security exploit that Mojang had not fixed in two years apparently. In its announcement for the patch, Mojang said: “We have released a new version of Minecraft 1.8, called 1.8.4, which is now available for download in your launcher. This release fixes a few reported security issues, in addition to some other minor bug fixes & performance tweaks”.

The update is technically optional but as you would expect, Mojang “highly recommends” that you install it. Among other squashed out bugs, users can no longer use malicious clients to force a server to freeze or force a server to run out of memory. A new item duplication bug has been squashed and a few other minor fixes were included. You can read the full patch notes, HERE.

Minecraft 1.8.4 is fully compatible with previous 1.8 versions so your mods should be safe and servers should now be a bit more secure.

KitGuru Says: Mojang was apparently alerted of the Minecraft bug back in 2013, fortunately, it doesn't look like many people caught on to it, otherwise Mojang would have been forced to fix it much faster.
