Another US ‘swatter’ arrested after trio of calls

Swatting, or the practice of calling emergency services with details of a phony high stakes crime with the hope of eliciting a scary and potentially dangerous response from local SWAT teams, has been a problem for years, with software used to obfuscate the original caller's identity making it hard to track down those responsible. Sometimes though, the police do manage to find out who was behind it, and now after a triplet of fake calls back in January this year, a 13 year old has been picked up in Camarillo, California.

The boy, who has not been named due to his age, was reportedly responsible for three calls to different people earlier this year, one of whom was his teacher and another a gamer he'd met online. In each instance he used a program to hide his real phone number from the police and called, detailing a home invasion and a hostage situation. In each case, the local SWAT team was sent in, only discovering after evacuating houses and blocking off local streets, that the calls were fake.

When her son was arrested, the boy's mother was said to be shocked at his actions, having no idea what he'd been up to. Detective Gene Martinez, one of the investigating officers, said that (via CamarilloAcorn): “Parents need to be cognizant of what their children are doing. In this situation, I’m told this juvenile came home from school, closed the door and was on his computer until the morning.”

Although the boy's age will give him some protection from the law, he will likely receive some form of probationary sentence.

  1. parenting: you are doing it wrong

  2. so yes while I agree with you parents have the majority of responsibility

I do have to say that at age 13 your moral compass should tell you that what your doing (SWATTING in this case) is wrong.. (really wrong even) so put some responsibility on that kid to..

I would say no PC allowed until age 18 or something and a good psychiatrist for some long hard therapy.

  4. even though i agree that a 13 yo kid should know better, let’s be real: he is 13!!! and no monitoring whatsoever!! that’s like leaving the stove on for a whole month while not being at home. teenagers will always be testing the limits, they are “designed” to do so, i did it , you did it, so even though part of the fault lies on the kid…. no idea what he does after he closes his bedroom door when he comes home? really??

  5. I didnt do anything like this as a teenager

  6. you never tested the limits imposed to you? (doesnt have to be ilegal ¬¬ ) “dont do that” still does it, that kind of thing?

  7. oohw I certainly agree with you that the parents do have the majority of the responsibility here.. but I just see to often that all the blame is put on soley on the parents… that’s like putting the parents of a bank robber in jail because the bank robber was… 17… (like I said parents still deserve some blame/ and are for the main part responsible in this matter but not all…) I also think swatting is an extreme test of your limits…

I would understand they have no idea what the kid would do behind closed doors.. (but like you said… as a parent you should check every now and then.. 😛 )

  8. In the UK, that boy is of legal age to go to jail and honestly I think he deserves it! I say we let im have it!
    Idiotic kid and irresponsible parents!

  9. totally agree, in this case I would go as far as saying this is a 50/50 responsability, he is 13 for gods sake, who doesnt monitor what a 13 yo does?

  10. We’re sending too many mixed messages to parents. One day we’re telling them that the Helicopter Parenting has to stop, then next we’re saying that if they don’t breath down their kids necks, that they’ll become hooligans.
