Even with Windows 10 on the horizon, Windows 7 isn’t showing any sign of slowing down. In-fact, the ageing operating system’s market share is still growing, with Windows 7 now dominating 58.04 per cent of the market.
Part of the reason for this could be that Windows 7 owners, along with Windows 8.1 owners, will be getting a free upgrade to Windows 10 once it is ready to launch. A lot of users who were stuck on Windows XP or Vista may have since upgraded in order to get the Windows 10 update later down the line.
Windows XP is declining, having 16.94 per cent of the market, in comparison; Windows 8.1 has 10.55 per cent, regular Windows 8 has 3.52 per cent and Windows Vista has 1.97 per cent of the market.
As you can see, Windows 8.1 still isn’t really taking off but it doesn’t really need to anymore with Windows 10 just around the corner. It will be interesting to see how many Windows 7 owners take advantage of Microsoft’s free upgrade.

KitGuru Says: Some of those Windows XP users have probably switched to Windows 7 now in order to take advantage of the free Windows 10 upgrade later down the road. However, I do still find it strange that people are so against Windows 8.1, even with decent programs like Classic Shell and Start Is Back around.

Windows 7 is fine, it’s everything we need. There’s absolutely no reason to upgrade. It’s like buying iphone6 if you have iphone5, it’s pointless.
I’m still gonna wait and see weather it’s worth to upgrade to Win10. Useless Xbox game syncs etc. There’s something fishy why they are giving it away, imho they just want to get you on the hype train and then somehow screw you over. Only time will tell. Directx12 might be the argument, but that’s about it.
Windows 8.1 is just as good as Windows 7. The metro interface aint as good as a start menu but performs fine. And for basic functions I find 8.1 tends to perform better.

dx12 is my heavy reason to upgrade to windows 10. and second minor is that it will be free ^^
Loss of AERO is my deal breaker.. i DONT want a tile interface. I have used 8.1 for as long as its been out and still find it hard to find a lot of things if i dont use search each time. Just not for me or many of the people i know. Now if they bring Aero back in 10 im in.
but they said dx 12 will be backwards compatible across dx11 cards ……so hopefully they just replace 11 with 12…..having to upgrade for just that is a hassle most wont do thats why people on xp are still around……but for 8.1 all you have to do is right click on the task bar go to navigation and click all the launch to desktop options …..or download start8, but win8 is faster and smoother than 7 ever was for me and i dont have as many problems running super old games
It won’t be free for me, i’ll buy a copy (upon reviews) but refuse to hand over my win7 license for the upgrade just in case MS don’t let me go back to win7. It all seems very suspect to me why MS want everyone onboard with win 10 immediately.

DX12 will kill WIN7. DX12 will only be supported on windows 10, so GG WIN7.
I highly doubt they will prevent you from downgrading back to 7 – they want positive PR, not negative. Not to mention, if your copy of Windows 7 is an OEM Version, then they can’t revoke your licence anyway, since your Windows Key is not Unique – it is shared by you and thousands of other people who bought from the same OEM.
DX12 won’t work on anything older than 10 because it requires a new WDDM Version (Win 8.1 is v1.3, 10 is v2.0) that can not be reverse integrated into 8 or lower.
You find it strange, I find it normal. There is a saying in Greek that says something like this
“Better lose an eye than get a very bad reputation”
Well, Windows 8 managed to get a very bad name, and that .1 doesn’t change that 8. Microsoft knows that.
Also paying extra money to move to another operating system where you have to install third party utilities from the beginning just to make it work like you are used to work with the operating system you are running, well, that’s a strange decision from my perspective.
well i guess that guy from amd a couple months ago was right when he said dx12 wasnt gonna hit win 7 …..he caught all that flak for being right ….whats up with that
