World of Warcraft has lost three million subscribers in three months

It seems that the new expansion magic is wearing off for some World of Warcraft players as Blizzard's MMO has lost three million subscribers in the last quarter, Activision Blizzard confirmed during its quarterly earnings report. World of Warcraft closed 2014 with ten million subscribers, now after the 31st of March, it is left with 7.1 million.

Obviously, 7.1 million  is still a ton of subscribers so don't expect World of Warcraft to be going anywhere. Plenty of other MMO titles survive on a lot less. On top of that, World of Warcraft is still the top subscription-based MMO in the world, which shouldn't be a surprise at this point.

In other Blizzard news, Hearthstone now has 30 million players. Hearthstone and Destiny combined have generated $1 billion in revenue for Activision, while Heroes of the Storm has received 11 million beta sign-ups.

Overall, Blizzard Activision has had a fairly lucrative quarter. WoW's subscriber count might be down, but Blizzard's other games are more than making up for the slack.

KitGuru Says: Blizzard probably plans for these large dips in subscribers a few months after a big expansion at this point. Are any of you guys still playing World of Warcraft following the Draenor expansion?

I wish they make it f2p at some point, for the players who already play it will not be a big deal, they could stay as subscribers and have full access to everything.

But for an old veteran like me it will be great to at least be able to roll the hills with my Belf once again and do a bit of RP here and there.

  2. it KINDA is free to play now…. a 30 day sub is ONLY 20k gold, i havent played in 2 years but logged on and can buy a sub for any account 🙂 still didint lol

I though about that at some point, but I don’t think I can manage to make that much money with the time I believe I can spent with the game.
If I wasn’t working all day long to prepare my new office maybe I could make that gold, I remember that I could make at least 200g per day just from fishing a specific fish, I don;t know if it still can made that much, but there should be something else to sell.

  4. Currently, a fair few of my friends and I are playing on a “Vanilla” private server that seeks to emulate WoW as closely as possible to as it was on patch 1.12.1.

  5. With the way garrisons work you can make 1200gold easy a day depending on how you set it up. And thats just 5 mins of work every day.
