Super Mario Bros. Wonder becomes fastest selling game in series history

For many, Mario represents the face of video games, with pretty much any title featuring the Italian plumber set to be a sales success. Even so, the latest Super Mario Bros. Wonder seems to have captured the imagination of fans even more so than usual, with the latest 2D platformer becoming the fastest-selling entry in the franchise.

As shared by Wario64 on Twitter, Super Mario Bros. Wonder managed to sell 4.3 million units in its first two weeks on the market. According to Nintendo, this makes it the “fastest-selling Super Mario related title.”

That said, it is worth noting that this only includes games released for the Nintendo Wii/DS and onwards due to the way data was collected, but still its adoption is notable.

For comparison, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (which also launched on the 20th of October) managed to shift 2.5 million copies in its first 24 hours – a doubly impressive statistic considering the total PS5 user base is currently much smaller than the Nintendo Switch.

All that said, Nintendo games are known for their incredibly long shelf-lives with first-party titles continuing to sell for years after launch. Super Mario Party – which is typically viewed as one of the lower rated entries in the sub-series – has sold just shy of 20 million copies, and so it will be interesting to see how many copies Mario Wonder will have sold in a year or two.
