You can finally buy the Black Mesa Half-Life remake

Last week, the Black Mesa website was updated with a strange countdown timer. The timer finally hit zero today, revealing a trailer and a link to the official Steam store page for Black Mesa, a fan-made Half-Life 1 recreation project that has been in the making for many years now.

Now there is a downside- the game is not complete yet. Black Mesa has launched on Steam Early Access, with the Xen section of Half-Life still missing from the game. According to the dev team, around 85 percent of the single player campaign is finished and now, with the help of early access buyers, it wants to finish up the remaining 15 percent of the game.

The game is a little pricey, coming in at £14.99, which will increase to £19.99 when the game is finished. There is no estimated finish date at this time either. So how will the final version of Black Mesa differ from the Early Access build?

The developer explained on the store page that the final version will feature “the conclusion of the single player campaign, with the addition of the Xen chapters”. Final polish will be added to the earth based chapters of the campaign and more multiplayer maps and modes are planned.

The game already has Workshop support so custom maps will already be available for the multiplayer component right from the start. The game is using Valve's updated Source engine, rather than Source 2. You can buy Black Mesa, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Considering that Black Mesa has been in the works since before 2012, I was a little disappointed at first to see it launching on Early Access like so many other games these days. However, if the team needs the money to finally finish up development, then Early Access does seem like the best option.

so in the end, we pay for mods…

no thanks, if it was a new game I could buy it, but I will not pay again to buy half life with updated graphics.

  3. £15 is too steep, never mind £20. £5 would be the ideal price for this, and it would likely sell very well at that price point.

  5. £5 for a decade of work on a full-length game, aren’t you generous.

  6. It is completely remade from scratch. It is not just Half-life with updated graphics (that would be Half-Life Source). It’s a standalone title, not a mod. Pay attention.

  7. Or £5 for a mod for a 17 year old game…

You can spin it in many different ways. In terms of the overall money they’ll make similar cash from selling more for less money.

  8. It’s a standalone title comprised of entirely new assets. It isn’t a mod, it’s a full-length game that has been in development for a decade. It’s worth more than £5, you’re just being cheap.

  9. Except it IS just half life with updated graphics.

so it is a made from scratch half life 1 with updated graphics…

it is still half life 1.

  11. To say it is “just” Half-Life with updated graphics is very ignorant of what it actually is. It is a lot more than that – in fact it’s a lot more than a lot of more recent, modern-styled FPS titles. It’s certainly better value.

  12. No, it’s Black Mesa. It is based upon Half-Life, but it is not Half-Life, or Half-Life with fancy graphics (aka Half-Life Source, which we have had for over a decade already).

Are people just being deliberately obstinate about how impressive this game is just in order to feel justified in complaining about paying for it?

dude wtf are you talking about? I played the mod before it hit steam from their website and it is half life with updated graphics, same story, same places, only updated graphics.

    from the mod’s site:

“Black Mesa is a re-envisioning of Valve Software’s classic science fiction first person shooter, Half-Life. Powered by Source Engine,
You will re-visit the inaugural role of Gordon Freeman and his
memorable journey through the Black Mesa Research Facility. Expect
detailed environments to explore, a huge cast of characters and
experimental weaponry. All-new music, voice acting, choreography and
added dialogue give way to a more expansive and immersive experience
    than ever before.”

So yes it is still and upgraded HALF LIFE 1!

  14. I was making a point about perspective, which you totally missed. It’s also a game with an identical story, characters, universe, and a borrowed IP, and so on. In reality it’s a remake.

You also seem to be persistently moralising, which doesn’t get you anywhere. That’s the game that the big music and movie companies play with piracy. They don’t care if it actually makes them money in the long run, all they care about is moralising. I’m a pragmatist: at £15-20 they will many sell fewer copies than at £5, and I’d wager that overall they’ll not make more money by selling it for more.

  15. The way you are phrasing it vastly undersells the game and what has gone into it. Obviously it is very heavily based on Half-Life, that’s the point, but it’s no mere mod or expansion, it is fundamentally rebuilt from the bottom up. And if people want to complain that paying for nigh on ten years of hard work, including a pretty awesome multiplayer mode and opportunities within the steam workshop for even more impressive expansion, then I am in disbelief.

  16. It is literally half life with updated graphics. Thats what it is. Stop being a shill.

  17. Nikolas Karampelas

I don’t say the work is not remarkable, I say that it is a mod, it took the original game and improved it with the engine of half life 2.
So it is the same game with better graphics, it is not a new game, I have played the game a dozen of times and I only played the black mesa mod to see this amazing job they did.
But that’s it, nothing new, no new experience for me, just a replay with upgraded visuals.

So no, I will not pay to buy the game, again.
wtf is your problem anyway, this is about me and what I choose to do with my own hard earned money…

  18. Certainly useful for those who weren’t born back then or for us, who want to experience the amazing experience of that game with updated graphics.
