Oculus has finally announced an official release window for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. Regular consumers will be able to get their hands on one during the first quarter of next year, so any time between January and March.
Unfortunately, we still don't know any final hardware specifications or how much the headset will cost. In the company's announcement it said: “The Oculus Rift builds on the presence, immersion, and comfort of the Crescent Bay prototype with an improved tracking system that supports both seated and standing experiences, as well as updated ergonomics for a more natural fit, and a highly refined industrial design”.
It is likely that the final version of the Oculus Rift will have similar hardware to the most recent Crescent Bay developer prototype, which features a 1440p display and improved head tracking features.
So far, Oculus has been pretty flaky about its release date for the consumer Rift. Earlier this year, Palmer Luckey said that the device would launch in 2015 as long as nothing went horribly wrong. Shortly after, the company made changes to its roadmap and he had to backtrack on that statement.
We can expect more details surrounding the consumer Oculus soon. “In the weeks ahead, we'll be revealing the details around hardware, software, input and many of our unannounced made-for-VR games”. According to the official Oculus blog, we can expect to see more at E3, which is just around the corner.

KitGuru Says: It sounds like Oculus is finally ready to openly talk about the final version of the Rift headset. Developers have had quite a while to play around with the technology so it will be interesting to see what games will support VR on launch. Have any of you been following the Oculus Rift throughout its development? Are you looking forward to the final consumer version?

I’m not so fussed by the quality of this thing, I’ve seen enough to know it’s going to be pretty damn good. More worried about the software side, I get that until now they’ve been dev versions but they’ve been far from easy to get working. We need it to be integrated into things like steam, where you right click and run in oculus, type thing. Or at worst, a new launcher just for them that scans your computer for compatible software. None of this showing up as a second monitor crap that just hurts when you look at the Windows desktop.
You ask “Are you looking forward to the final consumer version?” You are kidding, right? I have never anticipated the arrival of ANYTHING as much as the launch of Oculus Rift.
