Apple makes iMac with 5K retina display more affordable

Apple has introduced a more affordable version of its flagship iMac with 5K retina display. The new personal computer features slightly slower processor and lower-performance graphics card, but apart from that, it is still a rather decent machine. In addition, Apple slashed the price of the original iMac 5K in the U.S. and the U.K.

The affordable Apple iMac 5K (with 5120*2880 screen resolution) is based on a quad-core Intel Core i5 processor with 3.30GHz clock-rate and is equipped with AMD Radeon R9 M290 2GB graphics adapter (Bonaire XTX, 896 stream processors), 8GB of DDR3 memory, 1TB hard drive, two Thunderbolt 2 connectors, four USB 3.0 ports and so on.

The most affordable configuration of Apple’s iMac 5K costs $1999, £1599 or €2299, depending on the region. Previously the most affordable Apple iMac with 5K retina display, quad-core Intel Core i5 chip 3.50GHz and AMD Radeon R9 290X graphics adapter (Curacao XT, 1280 stream processors) cost $2499, £1999, €2599. The same configuration is now available for $2399, £1849 and €2599.

Apple can configure its iMac 5K systems according to demands of its clients. The PCs can be equipped with high-performance solid-state-drives with PCI Express interface and up to 1TB capacity, AMD Radeon R9 M295X (Tahiti XT, 2048 stream processors) 4GB graphics adapter, up to 32GB of DDR3 memory and various peripherals.

KitGuru Says: If you do not need leading-edge performance of a high-end workstation, but require an ultra-high-quality display, then the iMac 5K is clearly a system to consider. It has one of the best monitors available and its performance should be enough for a lot of workloads.
