Google starts rolling out major Android Wear update

The first major Android Wear update has started rolling out to some of the prominent Android smart watches available. Google announced the roll out of Android Wear version 5.1.1 in an official blog post, announcing WiFi support for the Moto 360, which we heard about a while back.

In addition, WiFi support is also coming to the Samsung Gear Live and the Sony Smart Watch 3. A couple of watches were absent from Google's list, including the Asus ZenWatch so don't expect every Android Wear device to receive WiFi support.

While WiFi support won't be coming to all of the Android Wear devices out, there are other features coming in the latest update. Always-on apps are now a standard for Android Wear, meaning that you can be running more than one app at a time on the watch. You can now also draw emojis on your watch screen and send them in a response to texts, emails or instant messages.

“The watch will recognize the emoji you drew and send it via whichever messaging app you’re using. Give it a try by selecting ‘Draw emoji' whenever you’re replying to a message!”

Aside from that, you can also change the font size of text for better readability and you can now pair up your smart watch to multiple smartphones, which could come in useful if you had a device for work and another for personal use.

KitGuru Says: With the Apple Watch now officially out, Google is going to be facing stiff competition in the wearable space. In-fact, the Apple Watch has already heavily outsold all of the Android Wear smart watches currently on the market. However, if Google keeps working on its user experience, then it may be able to win more Android users over.
