Oculus VR headset and a PC to run it will cost $1500 – CEO of Oculus VR

Brendan Iribe, chief executive officer of Oculus VR, said that virtual reality gaming will be a relatively expensive thing, when it becomes commercially available early in 2016. The head of the company claims that a starting VR package will cost around $1500, which is considerably more than the price of a typical gaming PC today.

The final version of Oculus Rift virtual reality headset sold in retail as well as a personal computer required to run it will cost end-users approximately $1500. Mr. Iribe declined to reveal the actual price of Oculus VR’s headset, which is due to be available in the first quarter of 2016, but said that over time the price of the device would go down.

“We are looking at an all-in price, if you have to go out and actually need to buy a new computer and you are going to buy the Rift … at most you should be in that $1,500 range,” said Mr. Iribe at Re/code’s annual Code Conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.

While $1500 is a lot of money for a mainstream PC, gamers spend hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars on graphics cards. As a result, there will be a lot of people eager to buy an Oculus Rift for $399 – $599 next year.

According to Mr. Aribe, over time, he would like to see the price of the “VR package” to come down to under $1000, which will help the company to address considerably more people with its virtual reality platform.

KitGuru Says: As expected, the first generation of VR headsets will be aimed at gamers who spend a lot of money on their personal computers. Generally, this it is not surprising. What remains to be seen is whether Oculus manages to sell a lot of its headsets, or the installed base will stall at a million or two. To make great titles, game developers need to have great business opportunities, which are determined by the installed base of target platform.

  1. that’s bit far from the “I want VR available to everyone” speech from a little while ago, and “we expect the Oculus to go for less than $300” made by Palmer himself….. (and yes I did read that the $1500 was for a complete PC setup not just the headset) but if the OR does retail for $599 that is twice what was forecast.

  2. $1500 does not seem unreasonable when you consider that this PC has to run two 1440p displays at 75-90fps. And requires a beefy CPU for all the motion tracking (requires more horses than you thing).
The price of new technology has always been expensive, but the price will fall; moors law is not yet dead. Within a few years the prices will have fallen significantly. Anyone who’s bought a graphics card, or camera those things can be even worse (or better depending on time of purchase), know this.

  3. Palmers dream was to make an affordable VR system that was priced at no more than $300 for the unit, and I fully understand about the kind of rig needed to run the rift. I am not a fan of companies who make bad predictions, the final price could be double the initial projected price, it’s a little wide of the mark imo.

  4. With the things the helmet provide… I won’t mind paying 400-500 bucks for it, but not more than that. Compared to DK2 it has a lot major improvements which are worth purchasing.

In my opinion it is a fair price.

Well they want to do virtual reality right. If the resolution and frame rate is too low, it simply wont feel immersive enough, certainly not enough to provide the VR experience. In order for virtual reality to truly take off, it needs to be done right, they can’t afford to risk a low performance requiring headset, with a sub par experience, to be the first taste people get

  6. I get kind of pissed off at times. 1500 dollars? It is nothing compared to what i have to pay in Europe. I’d probably have to go out with 1800 dollar alone to get the pc able to run it, without oculus, then another 600 dollars on oculus. You us guys shant complain…

so $1500 to buy a worthy PC and an oculus rift. that means that a PC worth around $1000 is fine which is about the average a HEDT should cost anyway. And what can you buy with that? a 4790k, a 780ti, maybe a 980 (Haven’t done many Maxwell builds yet) and some Corsair Vengeance Pro. Comfortable budget.
(Based off the assumption that PC parts in dollars is more or less 1:1 price of PC parts in GBP)

I live en Denmark but you are forgetting one big thing. We have a bigger pay check here in EU then they have en USA. So you need to look at have many work hours do i need to work to get this. And i bet you we will have to work the same hours as them to get the same things. 🙂 I base this on average wage. Some one will always have to work more or less to get the same. 🙂

  9. Have you been to spain? They earn basically fuck all there, and the prices there are so to say the same as what i pay for stuff in Norway. I’ve been to Dreamhack Valencia, and i have talked to several spanish gamers, who cant afford more than a below average computer to play on. For us in Denmark, Norway, Sweden.. Maybe even uk, we have it fine. It is the rest of Europe who suffers

Never been to spain sadly. But i can see the average in spain is lower then in Denmark http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_European_countries_by_average_wage
And a quick lock a GTX980 cost around 600€ in Spain and in Denmark if you convert DDK to €
So yes we get i cheaper here in denmark i can see that now. just thought it was close to the same when you calculated in work hours, but i see now it’s not :/

Here’s a build I priced out using the recommended system specs for the Rift that were posted on their site, about £690. $1500 is about £980, so I guess this means the Rift is going to cost about £300/$460? : http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/bVstyc
