Samsung warns of Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge RAM problem

Samsung has warned users that a small percentage of both the Galaxy  S6 and S6 Edge flagship devices are currently experiencing performance issues due to the RAM being mismanaged. Both devices make use of 3GB DDR4 RAM, but due to poor memory management in the software, only up to 400MB of it is left available at any one time.

So what this means is that the Galaxy S5 and S6 Edge are both using up to 2.5GB of their available RAM for even light tasks, which is resulting in performance issues. As you can imagine, the problem becomes more evident while using the Chrome browser, which is a bit of a memory hog on all devices.

Over on the XDA Developer Forums, a couple of developers have flagged up the issue. Fortunately, Samsung is usually on top of these things and can sort these issues out very quickly. In-fact, the company has already acknowledged the problem and started rolling out a fix.

In a post on the Samsung UK Facebook page, the company said: “Micro-updates are in the process of being rolled out to correct issues relating to device performance and stability. Keep checking for these on your device via Settings > About device > Software update > Update now.”

KitGuru Says: Samsung is using some cutting edge RAM in its latest phones and it seems a bit more testing should have been done prior to launch. That said, this was not a wide spread problem and is already being dealt with so it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Do any of you guys have a Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge? Have you noticed any performance problems? Try updating your device and let us know if it fixes it.

  8. How could they have missed something like this before launch?and what’s up with OTA updates screwing up Lollipop so badly? Not a good look for them at all

  9. I don’t know if I’m right or wrong but I thought that Android uses as much RAM as it can to increase performance. I also see 400mb left on my device but that’s the way Android works, unused RAM is useless RAM.
