Valve’s Steam Deck marked somewhat of a turning point for handheld gaming, with the portable PC launching last year to a great deal of success. While Valve has yet to share concrete sales statistics for the handheld, the company has reported that ahead of the OLED version’s launch, the Steam Deck has sold “multiple millions” of units.
As reported by The Verge, Valve designers Lawrence Yang and Pierre-Loup Griffais revealed to the publication that ahead of the official launch of the OLED Steam Deck, the LCD original from 2022 has been a huge hit for the company, stating that the system has so far sold “multiple millions” of units.
Of course, multiple millions could mean anything from as little as 2 million to 10s of millions or more – though is likely closer to a 7-digit figure.
Additionally, the team credit Nintendo specifically with inspiration behind the recently-announced Steam Deck OLED, saying to The Washington Post “[The Switch OLED] definitely showed people that the fidelity of an OLED screen is just generally higher. It's just a great product from Nintendo that makes a ton of customers around the world super happy.”
As someone who purchased and eventually sold the original Steam Deck (partially due to its lack of an OLED panel), it is encouraging to see Valve continue to support the handheld with new hardware – and in combination with the sales success of the OG Steam Deck, it seems as though Valve are now in it for the long-run.
