GT7’s Spec II update doubled the game’s active player count

One month ago, PlayStation and Polyphony Digital released their biggest update yet for Gran Turismo 7. Dubbed the ‘Spec II’ update, GT7 introduced a whole host of new features including 4-player split-screen, 50 new challenges, additional events and so much more. According to the studio, Spec II has helped to double the number of active users – proving to be a massive success.

As reported by OverTake.gg, Gran Turismo 7’s development studio Polyphony Digital revealed to the publication that last month’s Spec II update helped to revitalise the already-popular racing game, saying “We just released the Spec II update and the number of active users jumped up to double what it was before that.”

While no concrete figures we shared, Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi did offer a comparison to Gran Turismo’s previous entry, GT Sport, saying “[Gran Turismo 7] has been a success and we have more users” adding that “We’ve been able to maintain a really high number of active users throughout the release. That’s something very unique to Gran Turismo, that some other titles have not been able to see. I’ve heard that in the video game industry that’s quite rare.”

Since its release back in 2021, GT7 has seen a surprising number of consistent updates, adding dozens of new vehicles alongside more ambitious inclusions such as an advanced ‘Sophy AI’ driver and full PSVR2 support. With the Spec II update being received so well, it will be interesting to see what path Polyphony Digital chooses to take with all future updates.
