AMD’s flagship ‘Fiji XT’ to use new branding and cost $849 – rumours

The next-generation top-of-the-range AMD Radeon graphics card may no longer carry a model number, but will introduce a new brand akin to Nvidia Corp.’s GeForce Titan, according to a media report. The highest-performing single-chip graphics adapter is also rumoured to cost unprecedented amount of money for an AMD single-GPU solution.

In a bid to emphasize extreme performance of its next-generation flagship graphics solution based on the code-named “Fiji” graphics processing unit and 8GB of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), AMD will not call it the “Radeon R9 390X,” but will introduce a separate branding akin to Intel’s Extreme Edition or Nvidia’s Titan, reports SweClockers. Back in the days ATI Technologies offered Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition, which featured improved performance compared to the Radeon X800 XT, but had the same GPU configuration.

At present it is unclear how many “Fiji”-based graphics card models AMD intends to release, but previously it was reported about three solutions with different GPU configurations, cooling systems, performance and prices.

Fudzilla reports AMD’s new top-of-the-range graphics card will cost $849. If AMD releases three “Fiji”-based graphics adapters, then it can sell the highest-performing product in the lineup for $849. However, if the number of solutions in the lineup will be limited to two, then it will be rather hard to successfully position them while selling one for $849.

AMD’s “Fiji XT” GPU is reportedly based on the revamped GCN 1.3 architecture and integrates 4096 stream processors (64 compute units), 256 texture units as well as all-new memory controller to support vertically stacked high bandwidth memory (HBM) chips with 1024-bit input/output interface. The top-of-the-range Radeon is projected to feature 8GB of HBM memory with up to 640GB/s of bandwidth (thanks to 4096-bit memory bus and 1.25GT/s transfer rate).

AMD did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: While it makes some sense to introduce a rival for Nvidia’s GeForce GTX Titan X with a loud name, in a bid to actually re-capture market share, AMD will still need both Radeon R9 390X and Radeon R9 390 that do not cost nearly $850. Therefore, we are likely to see three graphic cards based on AMD’s code-named “Fiji” GPU.

  1. Good luck with that AMD…

  3. Excellent.

Well at that price AMD can go and Feck themselves.
Like the TITAN X it can stay on the shelves.
DX12 will give everyone a boost at XMAS anyway, so I wouldn’t worry.

The end is getting closer AMD

Yip. Wait till Nvidia respond and pick one up for half price on ebay. (If AMD are still in business)

  6. Still cheap compared to nvidia cards lmao

  7. wow to all the people posting herethat think AMD is finished where do you find this info. I mean why do you willingfully post nonsense facts with no proof to back it up. Just a bunch of jacked up no nothings with no grasp of reality!

  8. It’ll be interesting to see what exactly AMD’s plan is. What seems to be obvious at the moment is that Fiji XT will be the new card set against the Titan X. But I certainly hope that the flagships are also Fiji and set at the 500 USD price range. It’ll help their sales in the long run as well as provide some competition against AMD. It’ll certainly help bring down the prices of all cards, Nvidia and AMD included. We shall see though. It’s not long before the new AMD cards are released.

  9. Well, the problem is clear, while may be revolutionary, AMD is too late in the game, Nvidia knew that, playing hard with the witcher and batman combo for the gtx 9XX. They already know that will be much faster than the current generation and wanted to saturate the market with their cards and they did. For that price will be difficult to justify selling a gtx 970 or 980 for buying that card. Other than that, we will need some uber fucking game that justifies that card, or a deep in 4k monitor prices. The thing is how many of you are in the same spot as I am?
Using an hd4600 from a i7 4790k and 4k monitor, waiting a card that makes 4k gaming possible?

  10. HBM is limited to 4GB

  11. Nope, it had been proven that they can go up to 32GB if they want.

  12. So make more sense just to drop the prices to the GTX 980 levels which is just a slight massage of the previous architecture and be happy with it.

Aside from it destroying both the 970, 980 and the Titan(that costs over $1000 !). And it will use a 1024bit bus… thats 4k gaming right there. They will sell these like hotcakes.

  14. Brian Diffenderfer

Why wouldnt people buy a card that will likely destroy a Titan handidly ? Titans are well over that $800 price point.

  15. Brian Diffenderfer

people have been saying that for a decade, and AMD has gotten much bigger. Heres to the next decade.

    Fanbois.

  18. Good Luck AMD 🙂

  19. You Will See AMD killing titan X 🙂

  20. I’ve been waiting for this card for months but if it’s price tag turns out to be that much with only 4GB of memory I may have to wait till type 2 HBM is used. Whats strange is supposedly they are using a dual link interposer which should have allowed them to go up to 8GB.

  21. It’s too bad NVIDIA lied about the RAM in their cards. There are many like me that were about to pull the trigger on buying one of those cards recently. Now I am waiting to see if AMD will up the ante on NVIDIA. I mean seriously, they are (like intel) very anti competition. Dumbing down the playing field just to have an advantage. Hopefully DX12 changes all that and the HARDWARE will be what matters again, and not software payoffs to cripple the competition.
Here’s hoping we get some real competition in the GPU space again, and AMD (ATI) can rightfully take the crown back from NVIDIA’s snakey business practices.

  22. MAYBE it was a PR fuckup… but lets be real, if they can fuck up that bad, what else are they doing? I’d gladly drop $900 on an AMD card that will kick the TITAN X into obsolescence. The Titan x may have 12 GB of RAM but my trust in NVIDIA doesn’t have 3.5GB of fucks to give them.

  23. DX12 will actually make all this money NVIDA spent on their gameworks garbage obsolete. It will be about the raw hardware.. and AMD has NVIDIA beat in that regard. Remember AMD in the graphics space was once ATI, and ATI owns the crap out of NVIDIA and pretty much always has. NVIDIA just managed to pull an Intel (mico$oft) and buy their way out of it. While AMD was busy leveling the playing field. Get ready to see the fruits of real hardware with DX12.

  24. So true. I am waiting for the FIJI-XT (I cant call it 390X now because of AMD’s latest nomenclature). Just a couple of days ago, I got a reply from an nvidiot fanboy and this troll said the 960GTX outperforms the 295X2 in benchmarks!. What a god damn idiot……

  25. they can with type 2 HBM but not type 1. Type 1 is limited to 4GB however with a dual link interposer it is possible to go to 8GB.

  26. still in business? I’m confused there about to release and brand new set of High End GPU’s sounds like there sticking to the same plan they’ve had for a decade
