Update: A Microsoft blog post has now announced the Windows 10 release date as 29th July.
Did you wake up this morning with a strange Windows icon in your system tray? Most Windows 7 and 8 users did. Never fear, you haven't been infected with some kind of phishing malware, as it is in-fact a real upgrade system for Windows 10. Or at least, an upgrade reservation system, as you can't quite get access to the new Microsoft operating system just yet.

Instead, what the little notification allows you to do, is to reserve your free copy of the OS and register your interest, the idea being that as soon as the operating system goes live and is released into the world, those that have reserved it will download it automatically. At that point, it can be installed at will.
EAs you might expect, Microsoft also takes this opportunity to try and ‘sell' the OS to potential users as well. While no one with a valid copy of Windows 7 or 8 will have to pay anything for their version of the new OS, Microsoft is still keen for everyone to begin using it. In the reservation pop up windows it describes its speed and security, as well as new features like being able to ‘snap' up to four windows on a single screen, and having Cortana as your virtual, personal assistant.
While no one is quite certain when Microsoft's new OS will arrive, it's expected to be sometime in the next month or two.

Well, according to the instructions, if i reserve, it’ll automatically download but not install. So I think it’s okay to reserve a copy. There might be a chance that this is a limited offer. so as long as it doesnt automatically install, I think it’s okay to make the reservation.

I am rather interested will Windows 10 Tech Preview users get a full upgrade once the OS is officially released? Because all the articles mentions Windows 7, 8, 8.1, but never says anything about the current Windows 10 users.
Still some confusion whether my version is elligible, I bought the family pack of windows 7 from the microsoft store a while back (before all the changes) which has 1 serial key that works on upto 3 computers. I signed up for the free upgrade with the pop up but what about the other 2 computers?
They do. Microsoft said the technical preview users get the whole thing once Windows 10 is released to the public and out of beta

What’s the KB update that triggers this? Maybe I should just allow that update… I am currently on a ‘Check for Updates Only’ setting on Windows Update.
I hope there is a way to get rid of this advertisement on my taskbar soon ! I don’t trust MS with windows 10 with all the talk of subscriptions etc so I will definitely not be upgrading. If user feedback is good i’ll buy a retail copy as I have a feeling that if I went the upgrade path, MS would prevent me from going back to my copy of win 7 again.

I have the pop up on my hactivated windows 7, hoping it will work as i had a legit copy but i lost it when moving house.
Just clone your win7 on another drive then you can test and see if you like it, and then you have a solid backup too boot…no pun intended, well maybe 😀
Your serial key will be registered as a multi use key and should function the same with Win10 as far as I can tell.

P:S this wasn’t the original info I have heard, I have read articles from reliable sources from this year.
I’m thinking they will at some point disable the windows 7 key thereby preventing any going back and i’m certainly not getting sucked into a subscription.

Yeah it’s on the taskbar, but some people just aren’t getting it yet.

From what I’ve read there will be no formatting required so need to uninstall and reinstall any of your current stuff

What about those who have a “legit version” of XP and loved it. No more “major” security updates for it. Not my fault, but still, nothing. Not impressed 🙁

make sure you check for for updates.. look for KB3035583 which is the update that you need to get the icon..
I installed that update and restarted, still no icon?
Would be nice seeing it in my taskbar, given i’m using a valid copy of win 8.1 and all and all updates are installed…Grr
No icon here 🙁 Why is that? I have a legit Win7 SP1 which was installed on my laptop when i purchased it.
I found out you have to have Explorer 11 installed to even get the update to show up for the icon.
I have IE 11, still nothing 🙁

Does anyone know why it is free. This is not a company known for being big hearted or for failing to squeeze every last drop of revenue from any situation. I can understand that the strategic benefits but not how they intend to monetize this and that makes me suspicious. Sorry for being a cynic.
Its almost 15 years old for god sake. Move on old man.
Not immediately anyway, who’s to say that a year or two down the line it won’t be though ? They have been giving the idea some serious consideration after all.

An important note is that while you can upgrade from previous Windows 10 releases, you still need a Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 10 product key in order to activate the final version.
Well, for now there should be a process “GWX.exe” in task manager, that you can close.
To me, it wouldn’t matter if my Windows 7 key would no longer be accepted. I don’t need keys to activate Windows anyway.
Microsoft have clarified that Windows 10 will not be subscription based and that the caveat is the fact that licenses will be bound to the device they’re first used on.
I would also doubt that you would be unable to go to your previous installation again, as there is even a full system rollback feature that will take you back to Windows 7 the way it was before you upgraded.
But if I think about it, users like you are the ones making MS a good chunk of money this way, they’ll appreciate that.
Users like me won’t be buying it unless it gets glowing reviews and user feedback praising it. And from what i’ve seen most folks will just be doing the free upgrade or not bothering with it at all. I bought into the hype with the windows 8 upgrade and fully 100% regretted it, never again.

Did that, my genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit to windows 10 reserve still isn’t showing up. I got all the updates and everything to the latest like last week, and got some more updates, but I still don’t see it

Not a chance. Had less trouble with my XP in “almost 15 years” (LOL), than any other bloody operating system known. Hardly any troubles over that time and MS brings out more and more cr@p Operating Systems. XP was the longest OS with no major troubles 🙁
Windows vista was quite good and mac os is very user friendly once you’re used to it, the windows 8 series were a failed attempt on the other hand..
Is it just me or don’t you people get tired of the way Microsoft just think they can jerk their customers around with impunity? I don’t want that icon on my taskbar.

As long as you have the update, and your PC is up to date with updates, just wait. Microsoft is working on getting it to work for everybody. Just make sure that your PC fits the requirements for GWX.exe to run.
Yeah, I would agree. But Windows 10 excels even from the betas. Windows 8 ONLY is okay on tablets. It’s not really for PC’s but Windows 10 combines the speed of 8 with the power of 7. I will admit, I was skeptical at the beginning. But when it was coming with DirectX 12, that sold it for me. It being faster than Windows 7 and half as annoying as 8, what more could you ask for? And a lot went into Windows 10 from the beta testers. I bet that if the Insider program never happened, the start menu would never be there. I’ll let you think about that. You are in control of what you believe not me.
Well I still have a couple unused win 8 licenses so i’ll maybe upgrade one and put together a test machine out of my spare parts to give it a try. Am I the only one who finds the upgrade method a bit dirty though ? I mean to do this i’ll need to install XP or Vista then upgrade to win 8 then win 10. I know what windows is like with keeping it’s old files, so I would think 3 installations would have a fairly big impact on disk space & performance.
