Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti to cost $799, unless there is a last minute change

An online store from the U.S. has started to take pre-orders on Nvidia Corp.’s upcoming GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics adapters, which are expected to be introduced next week. If Nvidia does not change the price of the upcoming graphics card at the last minute, then the GeForce GTX 980 Ti boards will cost around $800 per unit.

Bottom Line Telecommunications, a U.S.-based online store that is known for listing unreleased hardware, recently started to take orders on EVGA’s lineup of GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics cards. The add-in boards are equipped with 6GB of memory and similar outputs (one DVI, one HDMI, three DisplayPorts), which may indicate that they are all based on the reference design, but feature different clock-rates and cooling systems.

EVGA’s GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics cards cost from $799 to $827, depending on frequencies and coolers. An independent source with knowledge of Nvidia plans confirmed to KitGuru that Nvidia’s suggested retail price of the reference GeForce GTX 980 Ti is $799. The official SRPs for the U.K. and mainland Europe are unknown, but expect something like £550 and €750 – €799.

While everything about the GeForce GTX 980 Ti seems to be finalized and set, there could be major last minute changes incoming. According to South Korea-based HWBattle web-site, Nvidia may set the price of the GeForce GTX 980 Ti to $649 and cut the price of the GeForce GTX 980, which currently retails for $549. This information has not been confirmed by any source so far, but if it is true, this could be a serious deal breaker, especially considering the fact that the adapter is set to be bundled with Witcher 3 and Batman Arkham Knight, notes WccfTech.

Nvidia’s upcoming GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card is based on the GM200-310 graphics processing unit with 2816 stream processors, 176 texture mapping units, 96 raster operations pipelines and 384-bit memory bus, according to various unofficial sources. Graphics cards makers will be allowed to pre-overclock GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics adapters and even design their own printed circuit boards for them.

Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: Given the fact that performance of Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 980 Ti will be very close to that of the flagship GeForce GTX Titan X graphics card, it is very unlikely that Nvidia will sell this card for $649. Perhaps, Nvidia has a plan in place to cut the price of its GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 980 Ti graphics adapters if they are challenged by AMD’s forthcoming “Fiji XT” solution. However, the latter is not expected to hit the market next week, hence, at least initially Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 980 Ti boards will cost $799/£550/€799.

  1. Well At least It has 96 ROPS. £550-£600 I can do so hopefully I can get a great Aftermarket card at Launch

  2. Its even more expensive than the 780 Ti was

  3. Its like 850 australian dollars lol. Well, i personally believe this card will smash all high end games on 1080p. Im now like, am i still gonna get it or go for 2 second hand 970’s sli.

  4. This makes no sense for a variety of reasons:

    >Multiple sources have said $650
    >The 980, 970, and 960 all launched at lower prices than their Kepler equivalents. The Titan X costs the same as previous Titans.
    >The 780 Ti launched at $699 (Only $50 more than the 780 when it launched at $650) and along with it’s released, the prices of the 780 and 770 dropped significantly (in the 780’s case, by $150)
    >The 780 Ti was cheaper AND faster than the Titan, The 980 Ti is only cheaper and NEARLY as strong.

So by what logic would this make sense? Why would this be the ONE card that would be more expensive than it’s predecessor?

  5. Wanna be sensible ?

    Buy a GTX 960

  6. If its 800 based on titan x prices itll go for 1100 plus in aus.

  7. Well, on one hand we have a screenshot with listed prices, on the other we have some chinese sites with nothing to back it up.
Truth is, it’s not impossible that both of them are correct; the $799+ price tags could be for pre-orders/OEMs only, as the prices are often inflated for them, while the consumer market will get something around $649-$699.

Of course, if a $1000 card is sold out all over the world, I don’t see why a $800 card with only 5% less power would not share the same fate.

  8. ♋♪♪♪♪♋$ $83 /hour @mi5//

  9. You shouldn’t waste money on this card if you only play games at 1080p! 🙂

It’ll mainly be dead in the water if those new ATI cards have the Titan X matching/exceeding performance they are rumoured to have and come in cheaper than this $800 figure.

It’d be nice if the 980 had a price drop since I may get another to SLI.

  11. Please do SHUT UP. That is a stupid argument. There are plenty of games that you still cannot max out at even 1080p without a card like this, and SSAA is available for games that you have extra HP in, plus he could have a 120-144hz monitor.

  12. Looking to buy Oculus Rift next year, going to need at least a 980. The 980 ti comes at a nice time for me!

    Its $649

  14. The fact they can drop prices by 150 on a whim and still be within what they consider acceptable profit margins shows what scum nvidia are. They ride the name and the pomp fanboys provide.

I’ve been a lifelong nvidia user and due to their issues as of late with SLI and surround support I decided to use amd for my backup PC.

Cheaper and surprisingly enough – less problems. That’s not to say it’s problem free, but less problems in key areas.

Quad SLI surround has been a living nightmare and 90% of the time I can’t use SLI due to having an accessory display since nvidia refuses to incorporate SLI with windowed at the software level. Either way it causes issues at almost every turn in every game of a different variety.

My tri 290x amd box by comparison is a great experience. Apart from windows 10 causing a few hiccups with eyefinity and portrait orientation, it’s great!

Still – I’m a numbers man so I’m hoping amd steps up their game in that regard and I can perma swap. That or nvidia stops gauging and decides to use some of those profits for customer support reps and a better QA team.
