Lego finally wises up and launches Minecraft competitor

If there was ever an obvious missed opportunity in gaming, it's that Minecraft could very well have been a Lego property. Better late than never I suppose though, as it looks like the company has finally caught on that kids and adults alike love building things with easy to snap together blocks, so it's created Lego Worlds, a game that looks much like Notch's magnum opus, but with a particular Lego twist.

Developed by TT Games, which has been putting together the official Lego tie-ins since the mid '00s, the game is now in Early Access and features much of the more advanced systems which were added to Minecraft over the years. It includes dragons and towns and customisable skins, though it has a sharper visual fidelity than its blocky competitor and even lets you build and drive around vehicles in a very versatile system. Unlike Minecraft however, where it's entirely free form, Lego Worlds combines the ability to customise and terraform the procedurally generated landscape, with digital Lego kits, where players can build classic structures, vehicles and creatures piece by piece using the in-game instructions. These constructions can then interact with each other, be driven around or put on a pedastol as an example of a master builder at work.

The only downside of the whole thing is that it doesn't support multiplayer at this time. That will be added in a future update we're told, as well as the ability to share worlds with friends so they can explore your creations.

Lego Worlds is currently available on Steam Early Access for £12.

KitGuru Says: I wonder if this is too late to really catch on with the millions who have popularised Minecraft. It is pretty though and if TT can get multiplayer in there in short order, it could well be a huge game.

  1. multiplayer or nope

Just installing it, I was always put off minecraft because it was rather ugly looking but this looks good. And for an early access game it looks a lot closer to release and polished than other early access games I have been following.

Why didn’t you mod your minecraft then? Easy ways to make it look better

Never bought it so nothing to mod. I hope this lego game supports modding in the future. At the moment it needs some optimization, low frame rates with a lot of the world in frame.

  5. I honestly think they’re too late to the party to make an impact. Minecraft is far to big and is even used in schools to help children. If Lego came out with this before Minecraft, which they really should of, they would have stood a chance.

  7. If you need money for a sex change operation, you’re doing it wrong.

  8. Is it actually voxel based? Doesn’t seem like it.

  9. You obviously underestimate the much, MUCH broader fan base that Lego has vs. Minecraft. We’re talking epic difference here. Practically everyone loves Lego, but Minecraft has a niche market and is ever-vigilantly being destroyed by Microsoft. Not only that, but since it’s an official title, and by the same people who make the other Lego games, the possibilities of what they can program this game to do are practically endless. Imagine multi-game integration, like them being able to see you have another game they made, which the save and/or installation data can then be read and used to unlock content in this game. Take a look at The Lego Movie and think of that as a preview of the possibilities that this game could have.

Regardless, you’re clearly underestimating the vastness of the Lego fan base.

  10. Stood a chance!!?? If this had been released in 2009, there would’ve been no Minecraft at all.

  11. For all the people that are curious by this comment. The game does NOT currently have multiplayer, they are planning online multiplayer for late 2015, early 2016. I will probably not purchase it until multiplayer has been implemented, but I like Lego games in general, so I’ll eventually break down and buy it before then probably.

I’m not sure it’s a bit hard to tell, from what i’ve seen so far and my limited knowledge on voxel based games, I’d say yes it seems to be.

  13. Yeah you don’t know anything about this. You seem like a fanboy to minecraft. You do know that its top seller on Steam right off the bat. Just enjoy that there is a new type of mincraft-like game out.
