Apple wants to go back to hiding its iPhone antennas

Ever since the iPhone 4 was first introduced, Apple has had its antenna shown off on the outside of its mobile devices. On the iPhone 4, 5 and 5s it can be seen at the metal ring around the phone while on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus you can see it was the plastic lines going over the top of the top of the phone, drawing a line on the back of the device underneath the camera.

It turns out that Apple isn't a huge fan of this design and may be working on a way to go back to hiding the iPhone antenna. According to the United States Trademark and Patent office, Apple has filed for a new patent, describing a newly invented material that would allow Apple to hide those antenna lines once and for all.

The patent specifically describes: “Composite structures that have an appearance of an anodized bulk metal but that is non-capacitive and/or radio frequency (RF) transparent are disclosed”.

The above quote is essentially a fancy way of saying that Apple wants to build a completely metal iPhone again, rather than having those plastic lines on the back. Obviously, just because Apple filed a patent does not mean that they will ever use the technology. However, it does sound likely so we may end up seeing a slightly adjusted design on the iPhone 7 come next year.
