After the release of The Last of Us Part 1, the second remaster for Naughty Dog's 2013 masterpiece, rumours began swirling that we would see a remaster for The Last of Us Part 2 as well. As it turns out, those rumours were true, with Sony officially announcing the game last night.
The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is heading to PlayStation 5 on the 19th of January 2024, Naughty Dog and Sony have now confirmed. While we questioned the need for The Last of Us Part 1 at the time, the remaster for Part 2 does look a tad more promising thanks to the addition of new content and a new game mode.
The new version of the game will naturally include better graphics to take advantage of the PS5's upgraded hardware as well as full support for the DualSense controller's features. However, the real hook here is the inclusion of new playable sequences that were originally cut from the game. Additionally, the remaster will include an all-new survival mode, allowing players to really test out their combat skills in a rogue-like setting.
With that in mind, the game is both enhanced and expanded, giving more reasons for players to return to the game just a few years after its initial release. These additions will also make the $10 upgrade for previous owners of the game a bit more palatable.
On PS5, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered will have a native 4K mode, as well as a 1440p performance mode. The option to unlock the frame rate entirely for Variable Refresh Rate displays will also be available. A Developer Commentary mode is also available, so you can listen to the developers talk about the creation of certain scenes as you make your way through the game.
For now, there is no announcement of a PC version but given that The Last of Us Part 1 landed on PCs earlier this year, we would anticipate that Part 2 will also make its way over eventually.
