Job listings hint at live-service gameplay for Monolith’s Wonder Woman game

Warner Bros. leadership made it clear recently that it wants to transform its games division into a live-service powerhouse, stepping away from the single-player action titles like the Batman: Arkham series or even the more recent Middle-Earth games. This will all kick off with Rocksteady's Suicide Squad game next year and it looks like Monolith Productions' upcoming Wonder Woman game will follow in its footsteps.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO, David Zaslav, confirmed during an earnings call this month that the company's goal with its games division is to turn its biggest franchises into live-service games. The idea is to throw out single-player-only gameplay and transition towards multiplayer, ongoing updates and microtransactions to boost long-term revenues. This unfortunately means we are unlikely to see a game in a similar vein to Batman: Arkham anytime soon.

WB already has its flagship studio, Rocksteady Games, working on this initiative with Suicide Squad, a Destiny or Division-style co-op game featuring the ragtag group of DC villains fighting the Justice League. From there, Monolith Productions will be producing its own live-service style game based on Wonder Woman.

We've known about Monolith's Wonder Woman game for a long time already but it has been a long time since we've had an update on its development. Unfortunately for fans hoping for a fun, single-player adventure, new job listings show that Wonder Woman will incorporate live-service elements.

While the benefits of a live-service title do sound great to investors, as they are designed to be open-ended, ongoing experiences that keep players engaged and constantly spending, it does not necessarily sound great for gaming fans. In recent years, we've seen a number of ambitious ‘live service' games flop, and the industry's biggest success story, Destiny, is floundering in 2023 due to player attrition.

KitGuru Says: I'm sure the executives at WB think this is a really great idea but to me, it comes across as greatly out of touch.
