Sony may launch an Xperia Z5 with Snapdragon 820 in September

It looks like Sony might be planning to launch its next flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z5, in September this year. Better yet, it may include Qualcomm's next flagship mobile ship, the Snapdragon 820, which will take over from the Snapdragon 810 and hopefully take care of the pesky heat issues that came along with it.

Sony only just launched the Xperia Z4 recently in Japan, which is also known as the Xperia Z3+ here in the UK (confusing we know), unfortunately, Sony has noted that the device suffers from heat issues stemming from the Snapdragon 810, although it has tried to patch it up with software.

Now according to sources speaking with Technodify, Sony is preparing to launch the Xperia Z5 in just a few months time, equipped with a Snapdragon 820, 4GB of RAM and a fairly beefy 4500mAh battery. Apparently the design of the device will mostly remain unchanged, although it will apparently come with a fingerprint sensor.

Android M is set to bring native support for biometric sensors to the OS but that won't be arriving until October, or possibly later depending on how long it takes Google to launch its next Nexus smartphone, after all, last year's model was significantly delayed following its announcement. If the Xperia Z5 comes with a fingerprint sensor, then Sony will likely make getting Android M on to the smartphone a priority.

Right now this is all rumour as the source isn't particularly well known and we don't know exactly who Technodify spoke to in order to obtain this information, so take everything with a pinch of salt.

KitGuru Says: Honestly flagship smartphone hardware has become incredibly easy to predict over the last few years, the only company to throw us a curve ball recently is Samsung, after it ditched Qualcomm in favour of its own chip for the Galaxy S6 but even that was squandered due to early leaks and rumours. Are any of you currently using a Sony Xperia smartphone? Thinking about upgrading this year?

  1. I’ve got a Z3. It’s a beautiful bit of kit and would quite happily shop it in to upgrade to the Z5 in September if it comes out then. I traded in my S4 to get this one and haven’t regretted it for a second.

  2. I have had a Xperia Z for a couple of years now, time for me to upgrade, I have to say i’m not overly impressed with the apple or samsung smartphones and my option was for the Xperia Z3 which isn’t exactly new but better than what i have, now the question do i upgrade in a couple of weeks or wait til september and hope the rumors are true and my network will have the Z5 as an upgrade option :/

better get Z5 instead of Z3. because 64Bit and 4GB Ram!

  4. I’ve had the Z since the day it was released (my first smartphone as it was the first one that wowed me), I was going to go for the Z3+ as everything has improved a worthwhile amount over the Z, but the overheating has put me off completely. I’m now going to wait for the Z5 or whatever they decide to call it.

  5. it’s a tough choice since this is a rumor and i’ve been put off the Z3+ and then there’s the wait for a new phone that is only rumored for september release, I’ll probably just go for the Z3 as I don’t like the samsung, HTC or apple phones right now, if it wasn’t a rumor and was confirmed for september then I’d definetely wait but I’m not sure about waiting for a rumor, Sony generally release their new phones very 6 months and with the Z3+ ( Z4 in japan) not long out i’m not holding my breath for a september release :/

Using a Z3, easily my favourite phone. I’ve used samsung, apple, HTC, nothing can compare to it. Both in looks and functionality, and extra features like the waterproofing, I’ve fallen in love 🙂 I won’t upgrade to a Z5 for the simple reason that this phone is still a beast and upgrading isn’t needed. Maybe for the Z7 😛

I use a $50 Xperia E1, and honestly couldn’t be happier. Yeah sure it’s not going to crush benchmarks. Sure it’s not going to have an ultra sharp screen. What it does do, and does well is be a compact, snappy, reliable smartphone that is powerful enough for my needs and also has great battery life. For that, I really like it.

  8. I’d like to give away my Sony Xperia SP für a possible Z5 Compact, please don’t disappoint me

  9. Did you mean chip?
