Xbox 360 emulation sure has come a long way

The last generation consoles are on their way out after being around for almost a decade and while you can still easily pick up an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 now, one day it won't be so easy, which is where emulation tends to come in. For years, many fake Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 emulators have floated around but it looks like soon we will have the real thing.

The folks behind the Xenia emulator appear to be making pretty good progress in their efforts to emulate the 360 on PC hardware. It isn't perfect but it is running games. The team behind Xenia has posted two videos, showing off Sonic The Hedgehog (2006) and Dragon Ball Raging Blast: [yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5FKb2j2Yx8′] [yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-xYac4ODKY']

As you can see, there are issues. For a start, Sonic is barely running, with graphical and animation glitches all over the place. However, this is a pretty good starting point. Dragon Ball Raging Blast has less issues and actually appears to be running very smoothly, once again, aside from the graphical glitches with shadows, lighting and textures.

It looks like Xenia is the Xbox 360 emulator to be keeping an eye on.

You can follow updates for the Xenia emulator on GitHub, HERE.

KitGuru Says: While neither game ran perfectly, they were running, with Dragonball Raging Blast actually playing fairly smoothly. It will likely take some time but it looks like Xenia could end up being the first proper Xbox 360 emulator.

  1. That is an amazing piece of work, maybe 6-12 months they may be able to get a stable game, and as soon as they get one the rest should just fall nicely into place.

  3. Hopefully it doesn’t get abandoned like other emulator projects

  4. I doubt that the 360/ps3 emulators will get abandoned so easily seeing how there was a great deal of nice exclusives on both sides and both were equally popular in the end.

  5. might get a friend to download a build of this and try it out with his op x99/gtx980 setup.

Wouldn’t make a difference as a Xbox 360 emulator wouldn’t touch 10% of that setup.

  7. it would going from my system to my friends since its on par with what some of the more prominent contributors to the xenia project are working with to test and apparently nvidia cards are currently more stable (no surprise there though since it seemed like all those guys have nvidia cards) and i dont have a nvidia card in my setup or windows 8 so it will have more issues for me.

  8. Note that Microsoft recently released XBOX 360 emulator for XBOX One: http://www.xbox.com/en-IN/xbox-one/backward-compatibility/qa . Maybe they’ll release a fully functional emulator on PC platform too, however it’s rather unlikely. More likely they’ll run a game streaming service from XBOX One to PC, or something like that.

Xenia has been around since few years and it’s their biggest accomplishment so far. In my opinion they won’t ever make really playable and working emulator. Or maybe in like 15 years… It’s too complicated and the project isn’t even commercial.

I did a little research a few months ago and there are no similar projects (except fake ones) which is bad too. Interesting thing is http://xbx360.com/ which isn’t in fact an emulator as stated, but software that displays X360 menus and allows you to run PC games using it.

Sorry for my bad English, I’m from Spain 🙂
