OcUK sells Super Flower ‘platinum’ PSUs at the price of ‘gold’ PSUs

Overclockers UK and Super Flower Computer have teamed up for a special promotion. For a limited time only, OcUK will sell Super Flower Leadex power supply units with 80 Plus Platinum certificates at the price of PSUs certified in accordance with the 80 Plus Gold requirements.

All Super Flower Leadex Platinum power supply units feature a fully modular design, 135mm silent PWM fan, high-quality Japanese capacitors rated to operate at 105°C temperature, intelligent thermal control system, single rail design and other advanced capabilities. In July Overclockers UK offers Leadex 550W, 650W, 750W and 850W PSUs with 80 Plus Platinum certificates at the price of lower-cost 80 Plus Gold models. For example, the SuperFlower Leadex Platinum 550W can be bought for £71.99, down from its regular price of £86.99. The 850W model costs £123.95, down from £136.99 regularly.

It is not a secret that power supply units of personal computers do not deliver all the power they consume to components because of natural inefficiencies. The difference between the amount of energy that a PSU consumes and delivers to components defines efficiency of the PSU (i.e. output power divided by its input power). More efficient PSUs use higher quality components and more advanced design, which means that they are more expensive to manufacture.

In a bid to describe energy efficiency of PC PSUs, Ecos Consulting and EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) developed the generalized internal power supply efficiency test protocol for desktop PC power supplies in mid-2000s. The protocols are known to the general public under marketing names “80 Plus”, they describe maximum efficiencies demonstrated by PSUs under different loads.

In order to get the “80 Plus Gold” certificate from Ecos, a PSU has to be 88 per cent – 92 per cent efficient under a 20 per cent, 50 per cent and 100 per cent load. To obtain the “80 Plus Platinum” certificate from Ecos, a PSU has to be 90 – 94 per cent efficient under a 20 per cent, 50 per cent and 100 per cent load.
