The Xbox One is going to get Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

When the new generation consoles launched back in 2013, both Microsoft and Sony seemingly forgot about backwards compatibility entirely. While we know that Sony is looking to tackle PS3 games with its streaming service, PlayStation Now, Microsoft has taken an arguably better approach, bringing native support for Xbox 360 titles to the Xbox One.

Microsoft just announced the new feature on stage at E3. Initially, 100 titles from the Xbox 360 will be supported on Xbox One with more to come over the next few months. The feature requires no extra work from game developers, other than their approval.

Those of you who are Xbox Preview members will get access to the feature today while everyone else will have to wait until the holiday season. Retail discs will work as well as Xbox Live digital titles. Multiplayer will work so you can still play your 360 games with other 360 players and you will be able to stream your Xbox 360 titles to a Windows 10 PC.

On top of all of that, Xbox One features will be present, including screenshots, game DVR, app Snap and presumably Twitch streaming, although that has not been confirmed specifically.

KitGuru Says: While it would have been better for the Xbox One if this feature was present from the start, this is a great announcement for 360 players who have held off until now.

They can try to polish a turd all they want, but it will still be a turd.

  2. Incisive. Seriously agenda much love?

Agenda? I have no agenda, I just feel that the Xbox One is an outdated, underpowered, over-priced, gimmicky piece of equipment that offers nothing of value over its rivals. Plus, I will never forget all the absolutely horrendous things Microsoft attempted to introduce when they announced the Xbone. I would never own one entirely for that reason. If I was going to get a console I would go with the PS4 (already have the WiiU), but I would never put Microsoft’s intrusive piece of poo in my livingroom, even if they added backward compatibility with the 360.

  4. I doubt that many in here value your opinion anyway

  5. The PS4 really has nothing over it, like a gig of ram or something? wow.
The backwards compatibility is incredible, I have a whole library of games I can play again since my 360 died!

    You’re just jealous 😀

  6. already have a WiiU
everything you say is now meaningless

  7. Let me just teabag you with my PC that I’ll be able to play Xbox games on.

  8. they have the same amount of ram.
the problem for Xbox One that it uses outdated DDR3 ram Vs the GDDR5 on the PS4, also the PS4 has more GPU “cores”. this combo allowed games to run at 1080p on PS4 vs 720P on Xbox

The differences between the two systems is actually pretty profound. They have pretty similar processors that are based on the same 8-core architecture, but the GPU on the PS4 has approximately 40% more processing power than the XBO. The differences in RAM is also pretty big: the PS4 uses 8GB of GDDR5 memory, while the XBO uses 8GB’s of the DDR3 standard with significantly less memory bandwidth. The architecture of the XBO is also more complex because of this, which is why it has a less powerful GPU, they had to dedicate more architectural space to create tricks to attempt to push RAM speed and bandwidth up. The Kinect also adds an extra 10% overhead, further reducing processing power to games. It is pretty common to see games on the PS4 running at 1080p at 30 or 60 fps, and the same game on the XBO running at 720p or 900p. The PS4 was built for gamers, the XBO was built as an entertainment hub that supports gaming and it shows.

Streaming to a PC isn’t even remotely similar to actually playing on the PC, and kind of asinine, in most situations, when you think of it. Plus, a lot of work is being put into a viable 360 emulator on PC, right now, so it won’t matter for long anyway.

  11. Surprised it took them so long given the GPUs are both AMD, the processors both x86 and the OS both versions of windows running DX. Whilst I am sure it isn’t a simple job it would have been a massive feature when they released the Xbox One nearly two years ago. Now it is a nice but niche feature, I mean how many 360 games do most XB1 owners have time for these days?

  12. Well, they’re both about as powerful as a five year old computer then..
    hehe.
But what can I say, Microsoft just does a better job these days! I was a Sony fanboy once when ps1 came out (and ps2) but they really just fell off the boat with their inferior services, controllers and user interface.
I appreciate your essay about the differences and I will give you that the ps4 has more potential but they both have the same games dude, you can’t really claim one has better games than the other since there are barely any exclusives anymore. I’ve played both and own the Xbone, and even while I’m waiting for good games to start rolling in (just like playstation owners are doing) I can at least use it as an awesome media box..

All this aside – I may have to buy a ps4 to get the ff7 remake the day it comes out (i bought a ps3 eventually too) so this is all really moot anyways!

  13. Cool, yeah true, I just don’t like the system anyways.. The controllers are made for baby-handed little-people 😉
