Fallout Shelter has made more money than Candy Crush this week

This week, Bethesda announced a new smartphone game called Fallout Shelter. For now, it is only available on iOS but it looks like in the last week, the game has managed to rake in more money than Candy Crush Saga, proving that free to play games can make good money without the use of cool down timers or premium currency.

According to statistics from App Annie, Fallout Shelter is the third highest grossing app on iOS in the US and UK this week, beating Candy Crush but losing to Game of War- Fire Age and Clash of Clans.

This is also the first time since 2012 that King's hit mobile app hasn't been among the top three grossing apps on iOS. GamesIndustry.biz also points out that this is the first mobile game to break in to the top three grossing apps since December last year.

We don't know exactly how much money Fallout Shelter is making but we do know that during the first quarter of this year, Candy Crush was raking in as much as $2 million per day. When Bethesda initially announced Fallout Shelter at E3, it seemed like more of a promotional tool for Fallout 4 but now seems like it could become a revenue stream for the company.

Fallout Shelter puts you in the shoes of the overseer of a vault. The game has you building new rooms and facilities for the residents, keeping everybody happy, managing resources and collecting loot from the wasteland. It is currently available on iOS but has yet to land on Android.

KitGuru Says: I've had Fallout Shelter on my phone for a few days and it is pretty fun, although I have been screwed over by rad roaches on multiple occasions. The game does feature one micro-transaction in the form of ‘lunchboxes', which can contain anything from weapons and clothing to extra resources and inmates, although if you complete the challenge objectives, you will get plenty of these for free without having to pay. Have any of you tries Fallout Shelter yet?

  1. Not played it because it’s a timed exclusive and I’m on Android.

I don’t really have an issue with it being a timed exclusive per se – I mean it’s annoying, and exclusives of any kind are bad anyway – just that they were sort of dishonest about it. I mean, at least admit that it is, don’t try to bullshit us.

  2. I on the other hand are pissed off that they make them exclusive, surly they could have made the android version ready for the same day.
Its harder to make a game for ios and if u have all the stuff for that then its easy to make the transaction to android. At least that’s the way my mate explains it and he used to make games for both…
Would apple have paid them to make it exclusive for a certain time to boost marketing… Pretty sure they would not have to. Maybe Bethesda are just apple fans

  3. -> I left my desk work and since then I am getting paid Eighty-five bucks hourly. Wondering how? I am working over internet! My old work didn’t make me happy ,so I was forced to try something different… Two yrs have passed since And I say it was the best decision I ever made! Check it out, what it is about… <-

  4. You might find they didn’t want to release it to both incase there were a lot of bugs, as each device might have different issues (just a guess)

Luckily I can’t imagine they will hold it from android for more than a month or two. (I’m on IOS and its working great and its well worth the wait)

  5. massive rip off of “this war of mine” pretty dogey tbh

  6. No Android release, no good.

  9. Actually it’s harder to make games for Android, purely because there’s so many devices to cater for. Lots of variables to take in to account in terms of scalability! It will happen, but it does take longer if they’re going to make it an equally decent experience on all devices.

  10. Also the Apple taking a lesser cut to ensure they make it exclusive may have happened, but I find it highly unlikely. The iOS market is more lucrative than the Android market generally, so this could have doubled their motivation, but I am quite certain the former comment will explain any misconceptions away.

  11. Maybe my mate just had a easy game then because he found it harder to develop for apple then android?
