Intel ‘Skylake’ processors to be in short supply initially – report

Intel Corp. will formally introduce its Core i5 and Core i7 “Skylake-S” processors with unlocked multiplier next week and will start to sell such chips to end-users. The new central processing units are expected to become rather popular among enthusiasts, but far not all of them will be able to obtain new CPUs because they will be in short supply, according to a media report.

At least one retailer from Sweden along with a number of sources from Taiwan polled by SweClockers web-site claim that Intel will not be able to meet demand for its Core i5-6600K and Core i7-6700K processors initially. The initial batch of “Skylake-S” central processing units will only be enough for several days of sales.

“We have a small number of processors and motherboards coming,” said Anton Nilsson, marketing director of Webhallen, a Swedish retailer. “They confirmed deliveries will not be enough for a whole week, rather a few days. Unfortunately, it is also likely that the most interesting motherboards are further delayed by about a month.”

It is unknown why the first batch of Intel’s “Skylake-S” processors will not be enough to meet initial demand. It is also unknown whether tight supply will be limited to Sweden, or Intel will be unable to meet demand across the globe.

Intel did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: If Intel’s new chips are in short supply, then it is highly likely that the supply problem is related to logistics. Intel has been improving its 14nm process technology for more than a year and yields should be rather high now. Nonetheless, it is unclear when Intel is expected to be able to meet demand for “Skylake” CPUs.

The launch of the new Intel Core Ultra 200S family of CPUs along with Z890 motherboards was a thorny process. KitGuru suffered along with pretty much every other review site on the planet and you may have noticed we held off from reviewing of the Core Ultra 9 285K, Core Ultra 7 265K and Core Ultra 5 245K as it is clear to us that Intel has some work to do before this platform is ready for action.
