GTA V modders banned after creating new multiplayer add-on

As fun as GTA Online is, it does have a few problems. For starters, friends can't set up their own private servers to play custom-made content together, there are quite a few cheaters floating around and everything runs on a peer-to-peer network, which can result in connection issues for many users.

Fortunately for PC gamers, we have mods, so some modders decided to create FiveM, a separate multiplayer add-on that does not link up with GTA Online, as a result, it technically complies with Rockstar's modding rules, since it only uses single-player files. Unfortunately, it seems Rockstar isn't such a big fan of the project, as the mod creators have had their GTA V accounts banned.

FiveM allows users to play Grand Theft Auto V together in servers that are separate to Rockstar's own, it also allows for custom maps and modded content online, without touching the official GTA Online files. Unfortunately, there is one part of the FiveM project that connects to Rockstar. The mod requires a Rockstar Social Club login, which the mod creators implemented to ensure that only people who owned the game could play online.

According to a report from Eurogamer, the mod's creators were the first to suffer bans from using FiveM, with regular users being targeted after, suggesting that Rockstar is dishing these bans out manually, rather than leaving it up to the anti-cheat engine.

KitGuru Says: It sounds like the FiveM project was a step in the right direction for Grand Theft Auto V multiplayer. It would be nice if Rockstar would have ‘official servers' for those who want to play through the GTA Online missions, and then allow players to set up custom ‘community servers' for those who want to play with friends and enable custom/modded content. Custom server owners could set up admins to sort out any cheaters as well, which would make everyone happy.

    GTA5 online is fuld of cheater.
    Every single sever/session with more then 10 person on have at least 1 cheater, some time more.
    This did happen to me 1-2 times. No it’s every single time when there is more then 10 person per server. It’s really sad and don’t get why there is no anti cheat software in the game or why it’s not working.

  4. was driving in some truck when a player got in my way and was rammed out of the way, they managed to shoot me from their windscreen into my truck and kill me whilst we were all going 50+

    the in game missions are basically a set of small pvp sessions, not enough free players ? too bad

    waste of money buying the game

  6. I had been considering picking GTA V up but I’m not so sure now if Rockstar is going to be handing out arbitrary bans for doing something they themselves aren’t capable of.

  8. I’m getting Deja vu… NTAuthority never seems to have any luck. FiveM is great and so were his other projects before they got shut down.

  9. They only reason Rockstar is banning it is because they can’t market shark cards to you for it by nerfing misson payouts and ammo resupply costs

  10. it’s like they didn’t even try.. they just threw together the online shit and added places you can walk to that start different game modes and called it a day.. of course while removing animals and random events and everything from multiplayer. a purchase I regret.. but nothing I can do about that now.

    Should he have made it in a way it only works on pirated versions?

  12. I see lots of anger directed at Rockstar for banning people who mod the online game.

    Thats stupid, the online game should be kept free from mods.

    I agree that rockstar should consider allowing Dedicated servers that you can own and mod, and that are entirely separate from the actual online game. Stats being server specific, just like DayZ non hive servers, this would allow modded content to be played legally outside of the normal online environment.

    Something like that would be easy for them to implement if they chose to, an extra .exe that is specific for modded content, that ensures exclusion from the normal game pool, have it launch to a “server browser” that contacts a master server, ensures that the game is owned, and authorizes access, then the player can chose what ever server they want, and as long as this is kept outside of the normal online environment then i can’t see why anyone would have a problem with that.

    Because while rockstar might not actively discourage mods, it is against the end user agreement and their terms of services, to modify, change, replace, adjust, remove or whatever to their original content, so people who are using mods are lucky to have the ability to do so, because if rockstar wanted to, they could ban everyone who has any trace of modded content, and there would be nothing anyone could do about it, if you own the game, you agreed to their terms of service, and they are free to enforce those terms when ever they sit fit.

    There are only 2 logical courses of action IMO, either something like i suggest above with the servers, or actively police the servers to actively ban those who are obviously using mods, most mod users online have the standard abilities, God mode, indestructible cars, ability to teleport anywhere on the map, the ability to kill everyone with a single button press, the ability to fly bikes/cars with a speed boost, all the weapons that they should not have, the ability to crash your game, the ability to spawn money bags, either by shooting the minigun or spawning it from your face, the ability to kick your from your vehicle at whim, the list goes on. All of these things are common place in online recently.

    These kind of modders, who roll around the servers kill everyone while in god mode, are the obvious kind that should be easy to spot and ban, and i do not mean “bad sports pool” which is not incentive enough for a lot people to not use mods online obviously, i mean ban their account from being able to connect and go online, leave them to play mods to their hearts content on single player, but prevent them from connecting to any online game ever again, like a VAC ban, or a PunkBuster ban, once banned, there is no being removed.

    I say that because 95% of the people i have seen that hack, claim the ability to remove them selves from the “bad sports” lobby and remove reports against themselves, and be back out into the main online game in a matter of hours rather than weeks, and what is the point of that system if it is so easy to circumvent.

    Just my opinion like, but im personally sick of entering online and being murdered perpetually by a hacker, while im still in my apartment, or in passive mode.

  13. With dedicated servers, they lose players on their own servers, which means they lose active clients. That is profitable for no company and Rockstar won’t have any of it. Their terms of agreement, whether you consider it sadly, or fortunately, includes having no modded content on any online element of Rockstar and the Social Club so happens to be one of such elements.

    Could FiveM technically exclude the social club bit? Yes. Do they then keep to the user end agreement? Probably not, as they still would draw people away from GTA Online, by offering an alternate service that uses a Rockstar product, namely the game.

    In the end this is one of those tricksy grey areas, where if you really draw it out to the legal field, the company who can hire the most lawyers always wins. FiveM won’t have Rockstar’s support anytime soon. If that’s for better or worse is something for every individual to judge for themselves.

    Maybe the FiveM team should consider entering the indy industry, making their own game. The people from Rockstar on the other hand are cool enough to even help them on their way if they’d ask.

    I’m one of them. There’s anti-cheat system in GTAO but many of the hackers goes under the radar.

  15. Hey, Ash Roger told Eurogamer that the mod has anti-piracy measures and this is actually untrue.

    FiveM does require you to log in to the social club (and you cannot play without logging in) but it doesn’t do any anti-piracy checks.

  16. I’m not sure why they did this. If it’s against privacy, well it’s already too late. Pirated versions will be able to play their multiplayer. The only thing they can do is to hurt modders which they did.

  17. It had nothing to do with less playing being on RS servers. There is no monthly sub. So no, they don’t lose money. If anything, the modders did them a favor to ensure that only non-pirated copies could log on to their servers.

    The UEA would have been kept in good standing if they didn’t add that sub. It states nothing about users playing on a private server as long as the online files aren’t touched.

    Stop making things up.

  19. For me it’s more like I’ll run into a cheater once every five or ten sessions, and I play GTAO every night.

    Rockstar really does need to figure out a way to permaban cheaters though.

  22. Did you even read my comment? or did you TLDR gonna post my shit now? I said in my comment, i agree that they should not have been banned for using single player mods. If you had actually read my comment you would see i clearly typed that.

    Do you not understand how this game works?

    The online portion of the game uses the same content as the offline portion, they implemented a login procedure that connected to the ONLINE servers to verify they owned the game to stop people with cracked games joining.

    Do you not understand what is written within the Terms and Conditions of the End User Licence Agreement anyone who purchased and played the game HAD to agree to?

    You can defend them until you are blue in the face, i do not give a shit, i keep having my online experience ruined by people who use mods, and myself and many others believe rockstar should be doing more to keep these mods of the online portion of the game.

  23. Rockstar provides it’s own anticheat system. It is not automatic in providing real time results. There is something you can do yourself to help the anticheat system along. I provoke, attack and harass cheaters while reporting them with the ingame system, some people take video of the cheater, tho I am not sure if they actually turn it in. However I do not call them a cheater or tell them I am reporting them. That way they continue to use their cheat and further add that they are cheating when they are reported. I’m just glad most of them are too dumb to drop you money. Otherwise you risk being put in a cheaters pool and have that money taken away. I wish rockstar had a voting system that would engage if a player was votekicked by enough players. That way it would come up and let you hit yes or no to kick them. Because clearly requiring all other players to hit votekick rarely works, because most people are either too stupid to know the option exists or just won’t do it. Now I am not sure how the anticheat system is doing in effectively banning all cheaters. Gta had a warning system in place that would place cheaters who are determined to be cheating in a cheaters pool for several weeks, but rockstar said they were going to take a stronger stance against it and outright ban players. I hope rockstar keeps up with it. I know you guys want instant results, but rockstar is faced with ensuring the player was cheating and not lag or some error. You have the problem of either false positives or not banning immediately. Some cheaters aren’t total douchebags and you can get along with them. However you still should be vigilant in reporting or start a private session for you and your friends.

  24. I still play San Andreas more the 5. Do you know why Rockstar?? Because you don’t get banned for mods. Simple as that.
    I think they need to make a like a “Custom Online Server” thing that allows anything but join at your own risk kind of thing.

    I have reported 3 person with video and send that to rockstar ban hammer.
    But if i have to report all i see, i don’t have time to play the game.
    I got some that drop money on me for random reason and my client froze from all the money i got and got only press ALT+F4 the exit the game. When i started the game again i still have alot of money now :/ Do not use it because i think is cheating to just get all what i wont from money i did not get on a fair way.
    I love to have a private session but i don’t know have to make one. and did not know you can have a private session so i will google into this 🙂

  26. Don’t worry, the guy is just biased, he likes the mod and he doesn’t like it got shut down. He’s on a know-it-all tirade while having zero sense of how the game architecture or R*s business interests work.
