Mozilla isn’t too happy about Windows 10 browser choices

As you are probably well aware by now, Windows 10 launched last week, with 14 million people installing the update on day one. This time around, Windows 7 and Windows 8 users got a free upgrade to Microsoft's latest OS, though even if you use the upgrade tool rather than doing a clean install, Windows 10 will wipe your previous default program choices.

It turns out that Firefox maker, Mozilla, isn't too happy about that. In a blog post and open letter to Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, Mozilla's CEO, Chris Beard, goes over the company's concerns, stating that it now takes users “twice the number of mouse clicks” in order to get their default browser choice back.

According to Beard, the new approach is “confusing, hard to navigate and easy to get lost [in]”. Most users don't really have anything to worry about, the first time you launch a new browser it will ask if you would like to set it as the default, clicking this will bring you to a default programs window, where you can set the default media player, web browser among other things.

Prior to the launch of Windows 10, Mozilla did contact Microsoft to explain its concerns but it “didn't result in any meaningful progress”. Mozilla's post wraps up by urging Microsoft to “respect people's right to choice and control of their online experience”.

Microsoft has since responded with a statement (via: The Verge), saying that: “During the upgrade, consumers have the choice to set defaults, including for web browsing. Following the upgrade, they can easily choose the default browser of their choice. As with all aspects of the product, we have designed Windows 10 as a service; if we learn from user experience that there are ways to make improvements, we will do so.”

KitGuru Says: I didn't really think anything of it when I had to reset my default browser in Windows 10, though I do wonder if other people were as annoyed by the change as Mozilla appears to be. Were any of you annoyed that you had to reset your default browser when updating to Windows 10?

  1. People that complain about a couple of mouse clicks are the same lazy, whiny, self entitled morons that get in their car to drive 1 block to get to the store – they could have walked.

  2. It depends. A few extra mouse clicks one time isn’t a big deal for a user. But for Mozilla it will cost them thousands of users who will just click off the little defaults window, leaving them with Edge by default. A few extra mouse click frequently, which is something Win8/8.1 suffered from, is a big deal for power users. It costs you thousands of hours of productivity in the end. So it really depends on the nature of those mouse clicks and who we’re talking about being affected.

  3. Dont trust this product!

Thats not my biggest concern regarding 10…I like the slick new look AND feel of Windows 10 and yes I am hooked…BUT…something is now concerning me regarding downloading/installing 3rd party software..I attempted to download and install Kies software from SAMSUNG for my galaxy ace 2 and had a notification come up saying..and I quote…”This publisher has been blocked from running software on your computer”. And yes I have turned UAC completely off which now makes me think when you turn UAC off is it REALLY completely off. I went into the properties for this software and “unblocked” it but still cannot install it..it returns a message saying “User Account Control: This app has been blocked for your protection”. I mean WTF this is a piece of software from Samsung and the sheer nature of the message implies software from Samsung is dangerous for your computer. MICROSFT GET REAL!

  4. That message occurs when the software is incompatible. Wait for Samsung to update it.

  5. The same Mozilla that made it damn near impossible to change the default search engine from Yahoo is mad about a few extra clicks to change your default browser? That’s funny.

  6. I had an issue with Chrome being removed as default EVERY TIME i set it, Edge would be the default every time, so i just opened chrome an set it as default from there, and that was the end of that.

  7. Bullshit from Mozilla ! I use Chrome and works very good . I`ve run it , and set it to be the default browser and that`s it . Twice clicks bullshit !
