GOG Galaxy gets its first major update

GOG's first major update for its Galaxy game client has launched, adding in some new useful features. The Galaxy client was launched earlier this year as a Steam alternative for DRM free games and so far, it has been positively received by quite a few of its users.

The standout feature in today's update is the ability to roll back on game updates, so should a particular update be causing you any issues, you can roll back to an earlier version of the game.

“We know that patches can occasionally break a game or affect your mods” explains Piotr Karwowski, VP of Online Tech at GOG.com “With the newest update to GOG Galaxy, we're giving our users more control over their games and patches, but also addressing many of the top requests from our community.”

The GOG Galaxy Update 1.1 includes improvements to the friend system, download pausing & resuming functionality, extended pre-installation options with more ways for users to configure games to their needs, and an improved app UI and navigation. The update is rolling out to all Galaxy users soon but should you want to get it early, you can go to the Galaxy settings screen and opt in to preview updates.

KitGuru Says: GOG has been growing in popularity quite rapidly over the last year so this new client could end up coming in handy for some. I quite like GOG Galaxy myself, though I do wonder how many of our readers use it? Have any of you bought a game from GOG before?

I try to get games from GOG where possible as I don’t like another company being in control of my games in the future. But the selection is a bit lacking.

  2. Heh, well, the problem is described in the name. GOG stands for Good Old Games – they’re specifically targeting bringing back classic games and without DRM so that people can hang on to their favorite games for virtually forever. Maybe it’s not obvious because they do have newer titles as well, but even then those are mostly indie games
