Star Wars Battlefront won’t include a server browser

Like many multiplayer games these days, Star Wars Battlefront will be moving away from traditional server browsers in favour of a new matchmaking system. While matchmaking systems have become much more common in shooters over the years, it seems that many were still hoping for a server browser as plenty of fans have voiced their disappointment.

Obviously the upsides to having a server browser is greater control over who you play with, along with what maps and modes you end up on. Additionally, you can avoid those with high ping for a smoother connection experience.

While matchmaking systems are good for allowing developers to ensure that all maps get played, they can be inconvenient for many players, particularly when a player-base dwindles as it becomes harder to find a decent game. All we need to do is look at Evolve in its current state to find proof of that.

Either way, we'll find out how Battlefront holds up next month, when the beta launches on the PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

KitGuru Says: I've always preferred server browsers on my PC games, though I'm not necessarily against matchmaking . Unfortunately, those systems make it much harder for smaller player-bases to keep playing.

  1. People just love to hate EA. Who cares, console systems have been using solely matchmaking for years without problem and the whole point of matchmaking is that you don’t get put in a server with A. people not on your skill level and B. a server not in your location, resulting in high ping, two problems very much present in custom servers. As long as you can group up with your friends/clans before the matchmaking then just admit that you really don’t give a fuck about it as it just does not affect you

  2. matchmaking hasnt worked ever… not as intended it certainly doesnt match skill level at all and it leaves alot of people stuck in high ping servers without a choice, they leave and try again only to end up in the same server again, you have no control with matchmaking, matchmaking removes the social and clan aspects of building a well known friendly server that meets peoples preferences, dont take this the wrong way but i can only imagine uve not done much PC gaming if you cant see the benefit of serverlists over matchmaking, but for most hardcore first person shooter gamers the PC is the only way to play FPS games aswell, they want to setup PUB servers and have competition servers always running, not a “we can only start if everyones online right now so we can group up and join” plus consoles use auto-aim functions still because controllers just are not accurate enough to be playable or fun for 90% of console players without it, its a shame but it is how it is.

  4. So you cannot join friends when gaming or join as a group or anything like that?
As i see it, it’s going to be mess if you will play with friends, or will it automatic join you and a server with friends? If there is no server browser and if it’s hard to play with friends, then i thing i don’t want to buy it anymore. :/

Just because there isn’t a server browser, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t play with friends. 😛 They’ve got the Co-op missions, so I highly doubt that you won’t be able to join friends as you play.

  6. I fell in love with the original Battlefront on PS2 and ended up forming friendships that have continued to this very day… How was that possible? THE SERVER BROWSER! Without it we wouldn’t have been able to create an environment of regular visitors, clans wouldn’t have formed, and lifelong relationships wouldn’t have been made. The server browser is essential to the Battlefront experience and the choice not to include it crushes the competitive spirit that made Battlefront so special. If SWBF for PS4 does not implement server browser functionality then I will be extremely disappointed, as will many others I’m sure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFmgfCn6As4
