Alienware to upgrade newly bought laptops to ‘Skylake’ for free

Alienware, a division of Dell that sells high-end gaming PCs, has announced that it will upgrade all newly purchased laptops to Intel Corp.’s latest processors free of charge.

Alienware is known for its high-performance gaming laptops with exclusive features and capabilities not available from other manufacturers. However, exclusive things take time to develop, which is why Alienware was not ready with its notebooks based on Intel’s “Skylake” processors when Intel formally announced them earlier this month. Instead, recently the company started to sell its new-generation machines based on previous-generation Intel Core i5 and Core i7 “Haswell” and “Broadwell” processors.

Since some makers are taking orders on their “Skylake”-based laptops already, Alienware needed something to attract buyers to its machines. Apparently, the company plans to upgrade all of its recently-purchased gaming notebooks with “Skylake” processors for free, the firm announced at Facebook.

All Alienware 13 R2, Alienware 15 R2 and Alienware 17 R3 systems ordered between the 27th of August and the 28th of September will be upgraded to appropriate “Skylake” central processing units once they become available. Switching of a mobile processor will probably require switching of the whole mainboard, which is why users will have to send Alienware their systems back to the manufacturer.

Alienware’s latest-generation gaming laptops with 13”, 15” or 17” displays with up to 4K (3840*2160) resolution feature various Intel processors, 8GB – 16GB of DDR3L memory, Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M, 970M or 980M graphics adapters, high-end PCIe-based solid-state drives, optional Graphics Amplifier external graphics adapter and so on. Pricing of the notebooks starts at $999.

KitGuru Says: If you are buying a new gaming laptop now, Alienware’s latest machines are clearly worth a look for many reasons, including potential upgrade. In fact, Alienware’s upgrade plan deserves a lot of respect because it clearly costs the company a lot of additional money.

  3. Just bought Alienware 13R2, still 7 days till I get it, I’m not sure I will send it back for upgrade in the near future, so I wonder what the time frame will be to send it back, and how long it will take them to upgrade it..I also didn’t buy it to use for gaming, so I’m not sure if I need more CPU or not till I use it, I do know I will not pay for the upgrade. I still need a desktop, so I will wait a few months and check out the new desktops with the new CPU’s already in them..

  4. I’m pretty sure they would have to send to back to the production company, so itll cost you another week+produuction days assuming it took a week to arrive, but thats my guess.
