AMD reportedly begins to fight back market share from Nvidia

Advanced Micro Devices began to fight back its market share from Nvidia Corp. in the third quarter of the year, a financial analyst revealed on Wednesday. While Nvidia still dominates the market, the launch of AMD’s latest graphics cards helped the company to improve its sales a bit.

“Graphics processor unit pricing and availability suggest that AMD’s recent Radeon R9 300-series refresh has helped regain some lost share at about $400 and about $200 price points, while Nvidia maintains a dominant position in premium high-end GPU cards ($500+),” wrote Ian Ing, an analyst with MKM Partners, in an article at Barron’s.

The analyst notes that due to shortages of AMD Radeon R9 Fury-series graphics cards during the third quarter, AMD could not really gain a lot of share in the segment of expensive graphics adapters used by enthusiasts. At the same time, the analyst indicates, that in many cases such add-in-boards are sold at prices, which exceed those recommended by AMD, which means that the company earns premium by selling the adapters.

By contrast, prices of Nvidia’s GeForce GTX Titan X and GeForce GTX 980 Ti decreased by 3 and 2 per cent during the quarter, respectively. Still, thanks to wide availability, Nvidia and its partners can sell a lot of graphics adapters powered by the company’s latest code-named GM200 chip.

Mr. Ing claims that since AMD Radeon R9 300-series graphics cards are readily available, but their prices do not decline, demand for such add-in-boards could be fairly high, which suggests that AMD is gaining share.

In Q2 2015 AMD’s share in the market of discrete graphics processing units for desktops declined to historical minimum of around 18 per cent. By contrast, Nvidia commanded 82 per cent of the market.

AMD is in its quiet period and could not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: Trying to guess market share by monitoring retailers may not be a good idea. However, at present this is one of a few ways to understand what is happening in the market. While it is a good news that AMD is increasing its presence in the market, it should be noted that given AMD’s current position even if the company gains 5 per cent a quarter Nvidia will still be the dominant player.

  8. More dumb commentary from Kitguru says.

    Here is the TRUTH:

An EXPLANATION of WHY AAA game DEVELOPERS are NOW OPTIMIZING for AMD’s GCN Async ARCHITECTURE = MONEY! = PS4 + Xbox1 + GCN GPUs since 2011

    1) Appx. HALF the revs that AAA game developers will earn in 2016 will come from games designed for PS4 and Xbox1.

    2) Since AMD introduced GCN architecture in 2011, which uses Async shaders, the INSTALLED base of PCs with these discrete GPUs is at least 35%, despite the lower percent of AIBs sold in the first half of 2015.

    3) So, when you analyze the $$$ revenue audience for AAA game developers in late 2015, it is at least 2/3 AMD’s GCN architecture to 1/3 for NVDA.

    4) On top of these numbers, most games tend to be created/optimized for game consoles and then PORTED over to the PC. Of course there are a minority of games that are PC only. Of course, there a few games that are created for the PC and then ported over to the consoles. But, the VAST MAJORITY of games are optimized for GAME CONSOLES. Now that game developers have mostly stopped creating games for the OLD consoles, and switched to the new ones, they want their games to RUN as good as possible. Using AMD’s Async compute engines allows developers to increase performance by 30% or so. A 30% INCREASE in FRAME RATE is HUGE!

    5) OBVIOUSLY, game developers are now using DX12 so they can OPTIMIZE for AMD’s GCN architecture, rather than NVDA.

    6) Only the total MORONS would suggest otherwise

And I will BET the IDIOTS at Kitguru… OK?

  9. Yes finally AMD is getting off their lazy asses and compete like they always should. I’m very happy they are “fighting” back. This means I’ll be able to get another GTX Titan X for $799 USD or even less like how I got my current one. Competition means I pay less, fan boyism means you pay more. Keep it up Nvidia and AmD I want my 2nd Titan X for Less. Hell, the way this is going I might even by a third one:)

  10. I don’t want Nvidia sinking either.I just want Market share to be 50-50.

  11. Keep telling yourself that when you go to sleep.

I’ll wake you up in time to see how Pascal crushes AMD’s toasters. Again.

  12. I’d like to see nVidia seriously bloodied and beaten for a while. It would serve both them and their fanboys right. They could use being knocked down quite handily. Just not completely killed.

  13. You mean to tell me you’re going to buy ANOTHER overpriced nVidia card that doesn’t have hardware asynchronous shaders? Guess you’re betting on DX11 remaining the defacto standard even with droves and droves of gamers upgrading to Windows 10 and DX12. Steam says nearly 20% of gamers had updated to Win10/DX12 after only the first month that Win10 was released. By Christmas, at this rate, almost 100% of gamers will have Win10/DX12. Does it REALLY look smart to spend another $800 on a card that’s already obsolete?

  14. At the same time, the analyst indicates, that in many cases such add-in-boards are sold at prices, which exceed those recommended by AMD, which means that the company earns premium by selling the adapters.

Then why didn’t AMD reap the benefits of the crypto coin mining craze?? I read then that it was the stores that were raising the prices of their video cards due to the demand and scarcity, and AMD was not making any additional money apart from just selling all of its stock at original price to tech outlets. What is different here? Or is the analyst just incorrect on that point?

  15. That’s exactly what I said. They gotta get beaten up for a While (5 Years at max otherwise,AMD will turn into Intel in Greediness !)

  16. Meh, bought a pair of powercolor 390s and already sold both GPUs due to shite over clocking capabilites and being unstable as all get out. Nothing changes, if nothing really changes. Im sure AMD will sell a few cards over DX 12, that is for certain. I look for Nvidia to once again run AMD over when the Pascal GPUs hit the market. I believe AMD is just too late this far into this generation of GPUs and the damage is done as far as sales are concerned.

  17. Nvidia is as 100% capable of DirectX 12 Asynchronous Compute as AMD, there is just no Trace of DirectX 12 Asynchronous Compute in the Drivers it just needs to be programmed. AMD just took the chance to spread “rumours” that Nvidia are incapable, while they still have the time to steal the customers… It has been proven and Stated, Go look up or die dreaming in your own world.
