iOS 9 has already been installed on 20% of iOS devices

Apple started rolling out iOS 9 to iPhone and iPad users less than 48 hours ago but already around 20 per cent of users have already installed the upgrade. By comparison, 21 per cent of Android device owners are running Android Lollipop, which began rolling out almost a year ago.

While the number is impressive, adoption for Apple's latest version of iOS is a little slower than last year, likely due to the amount of issues iOS 8 had when it first launched. That said, things seem to be going much smoother this time around with iOS 9, though some users have had issues actually downloading the update, likely due to the amount of people trying to update at once.

The 20% adoption figure comes from data obtained by analyst firm, Mixpanel, which says that 18.81 per cent of iOS devices are now running iOS 9. If things keep going at this pace, then iOS 9 adoption will be very high by the end of the month, which is good news for Apple.

Google has always had an issue with driving Android adoption for new updates due to fragmentation, mobile carrier interference and smartphone manufacturers that like to whack their own skins on top of the OS. It will be interesting if Google can level the playing field a bit with the launch of Android 6.0 Marshmallow in a few weeks time.
