Star Wars: Battlefront will be matchmaking-only to ensure fair play

Star Wars: Battlefront is just on the horizon, with an open beta scheduled for this week and a release for next month. A few weeks back we learned that the game would not contain a server browser option, even on the PC, for those who want to set up their own community games or tournaments. Now, DICE has explained the reasoning behind this decision.

In an interview with PC Gamer published today, Battlefront's Design Director, Niklas Fergaeus explained: “The nature of the matchmaker that we have is to just ensure that people have a fair and even playground. That's the thing. We want all Star Wars fans to be able to play this game and have a good time, and in doing that, we want to make sure that whenever players jump in, they get matchmade to players of their own level, their own skill, so they can have fun and a fair playing field.”

Fergaeus singled out ‘Star Wars' fans specifically twice while explaining the need for a matchmaking system. It seems that DICE is under the impression that Star Wars fans are a casual audience, which to some extent may be true, Star Wars is a franchise so massive that a game could attract new players to the FPS genre. However, this approach does come at the cost of some features that a hardcore shooter crowd would appreciate.

The final tidbit from the interview is that the matchmaking system will in-fact let you play on which map you'd like to play specifically, rather than being thrown in to an endless rotation with a limited selection each round. The Star Wars: Battlefront beta launches on the 8th of October, with the final game set to release on the 17th of November.

KitGuru Says: Being a big shooter player myself, I do wish that DICE has chosen to include some additional features, like a server browser or community server  support. Those on the PC appreciate that stuff in particular. Either way, I'll be giving the game a shot in a few days when the beta launches. Are any of you planning on trying Battlefront before it comes out?

There are no “red lines” with Xbox games coming to other platforms

Despite contrary comments from Microsoft’s CEO, Xbox head Phil Spencer claimed there are no 'red lines' when it comes to bringing its games to other platforms.

  1. No server browser, no purchase. Anyone who has watched their skill level yoyo all over the place in BF4 know that DICE are useless at judging a players skill. If you can’t judge a players skill, how can you match make?
Then add to the fact that it means those who don’t play with ‘friends,’ but do like to play with the same guys when possible, are having that option taken away from them & the decision to not have a server browser is a joke!

  2. I’ll be giving the Beta a go for sure, but it is highly unlikely that I will buy it as I will not pay for a multiplayer only game anymore as I tend to play a lot more single player stuff now (95% SP 5% MP – and that is being generous to MP). The last MP only game I bought was CSGO and I haven’t played that in about 3 years (apart from the odd round here or there).

In this day and age it seems like some AAA devs are moving towards MP only titles which is a bit of a shame really because when the servers get shut down then that is it for that game, at least with a single player campaign you can go back to it a few months/years later and still play it.

This is also the reason I never bought TitanFall or Evolve and looking at the popularity of the games today it looks like I made the right decision.

I can’t see this new Battlefront lasting as long as Battlefront 2 (which is still going), hopefully I am wrong as it does look amazing but I am sceptical.

Why not just make matchmaking an OPTION!?

Well you “could” add said guys to your friendslist, if that’s the issue. 😛 Personally, I’d like a server browser, but it’s not what makes or breaks this game for me. 🙂

  5. They’re not friends, I play against and with them on a regular basis because we play the same servers, but I have never spoken to them. Even if I were to randomly add them to a friends list (which is a little creepy), they would be unlikely to except the request. My actual friends who game are all consolers, I’m the only PC guy!

  6. How are players to.improve without playing against better players? Besides which great friendships have formed on clan servers between “regulars”.

I did not like the matchmaking system that was in the Alpha :/
my friend and i have to count down and press the join button the same time and 2/10 we get into the same server. If not we have to leave the server and try again. There where no way to join a friend or anything. If i cannot join my friend because our “skill” is not the same, that will be stupid.
I will play the beta and see but if i cannot play more easy with my friends, i don’t see any reason why to buy this game.
But when we get to same server and played together it was a awesome game and a lot of fun 😀

  8. I’ve played with people multiple times over a period of time, and both added some of them and been added by them, sometimes in game unspoken bonds are made, I don’t get how it’s “weird” to add people you regularly play with, regardless of whether you speak to them vocally or not.

  9. It actually makes a lot of sense. I’ve played on a lot of servers where I have added several people from the server and haven’t added other people from the server. However, I still enjoy playing on that server against those people. Sometimes unspoken rivalries are formed which can be very enjoyable but at the same time isn’t someone that I would add on my friends list. Also certain servers have specific setups that some players enjoy more than others. Not being able to filter through the servers to find the ones that suit my playstyle best is going to be very annoying.
