Black Ops II sequel reportedly coming in 2025

Though the franchise once had a clear rotation of game developers working on each successive Call of Duty title, the past few years have seen Treyarch, Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games all working together in various ways to maintain COD’s annual release schedule. Following the release of Modern Warfare III just one year after MWII, the 2024 and 2025 iterations of Call of Duty will both seemingly be set in the world of Black Ops.

As reported by Insider-Gaming, COD 2025 – codenamed Saturn – will be a direct sequel to 2012’s Black Ops II. This is interesting as BOII was originally set in the year 2025, and so it is rather poetic to see its direct sequel coming out in the year its predecessor was set. That said, according to the leaks COD 2025 will be set a couple years after Black Ops II; said to be taking place in 2030.

While the original pitch for the game was for it to include remasters of all of BOII’s maps (similar to what we have seen with this year’s MWIII), according to Insider-Gaming the plan has since changed, with the title now said to feature a mix of new and old maps.

Perhaps the most exciting report came in the fact that COD 2025 will seemingly feature “an overhaul to its movement system, the return of a classic ‘pick 10' create-a-class, the gunfight game mode, and another year of round-based zombies.”

Of course, COD 2025 is just under two years away and so any and all of this could change between now and then – especially with the recent history of COD’s development being in flux. That said, considering the love that Black Ops II holds within the community, a direct sequel would likely be huge.
