Assassin’s Creed Syndicate sales take a hit thanks to Unity

It looks like Ubisoft is still paying for its mistakes in 2014, as Assassin's Creed Syndicate sales have been “clearly” impacted by the reputation of Assassin's Creed Unity, the publisher recently admitted in a quarterly earnings call. However, given Syndicate's positive reception so far, the publisher is expecting things to pick up in the following weeks, though we have yet to see the PC version of the game just yet.

Ubisoft's Alain Martinez explained the situation during the call: “Clearly in our first week we were impacted by what happened with Assassin's Creed Unity”, Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot then stepped in to say “We seem to experience the same sales curve as Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, versus Unity, Syndicate was down in the first week but nicely outperformed it in its second week as it benefited from positive word of mouth.”

Unity was a massive low point for the Assassin's Creed franchise, the game launched in a barely playable state and PC owners had to wait even longer for proper performance fixes. However, this year things seem to have gone down much smoother, having played around six hours of Syndicate myself, I can say that it seems to be running much better than Unity did- on Xbox One at least.

The PC version of Syndicate hasn't launched just yet, though it is due out before the end of the year. Hopefully we will see an improvement there too.

KitGuru Says: I am actually really enjoying Assassin's Creed: Syndicate this year, though it doesn't change the formula much in terms of combat or exploration. The story seems to be pretty interesting to me at least. Do any of you still play the Assassin's Creed games? Are you thinking about picking up Syndicate or did Unity put you off for good?

  1. Not only unity put me off, Uplay has stopped me buying any Ubisoft games ever again. Too many problems from ubisoft and they only seem to care when it hit their bank accounts.

  2. Played all until syndicate(still waitin’ for PC version) and last played was FreedomCry(has issues with 21:9 aspect ratio…fixed after few searches!
I enjoyed every game from UBI, even Unity and hope that syndicate will rocks!

  3. Does syndicate have the co-op like Unity?

  4. no CO-OP , no MP , just SP…seems

  5. That sucks, isnt that a step backwards? I liked the idea Unity brought, they failed at execution but i thought maybe they’d get it right this time. Owell i picked up Unity in the bargain bin for $10, its still collecting dust on the shelf unopened lol.

  6. yes ..it is, maybe…but I prefer one good game just with single player(without stuttering, gameplay, combat, optimization issues), than one game with all features SP, MP, CO-OP bug-ished, who lacks of optimization and so on.

  7. I got burned doing the pre-order CE of Unity….not forking over my money to them like that again.

  8. The problem is that Ubisoft dosent give a rats ass about its customers.

  9. I have finished playing Rogue as of 2 AM this morning unfortunately I played unity at midnight on launch day, while most people had issues I did not until I started trying to co-op. I haven’t returned to playing unity (I’m shy of 100%) but I will say No. Unity didn’t put me off from Ubisoft or Assassin’s Creed. I Pre-Ordered Syndicate as well I thought Unity was a great game with innovation but wasn’t polished. When it is released at midnight will I be a Day 1 player (PC)? Possibly. I also have Fallout 4 pre-ordered so I may still be playing that. But chances are I will flip flop between them. Fallout 4’s frustration with dying and AC Syndicate with collecting every little thing : Chests, Fragments, Maps etc. (Seriously it feel like they want you to spend hours collecting things just to burn play time)

I love the AC Universe since Day 1 when I got a PS3 at midnight and it was bundled with Assassin’s Creed and I didn’t know crap about it then. Boy I am glad I decided to open that case up and play it. While I am a hardcore PC player (Lets just say I play a few PS exclusives from time to time inFAMOUS seriously that is a great game too bad it’s exclusive a PC version would be amazing) I don’t mind Ubisofts latest ports since that finally fixed the god awful controls for a keyboard (Just look at AC and ACII control schemes, Open Hand, Closed Fist, Legs, Eyes were what they called everything. So in the heat of a scene you frequently hit the wrong button because it just didn’t tell you what key to press.

MP was a separate department, was fairly fun after a while I got used to it and it felt competitive. MP was essentially the Templar storyline you got to learn about the other half as they trained in the animi. I don’t know if they are going to keep up with the Templar storyline games but the 2 games (One Templar, One Assassin) seems like a good replacement to the multiplayer storyline seeing as you needed to put in a lot of hours into multiplayer to unlock all the story videos and fragments and some people avoided multiplayer therefore not learning the story.

Co-Op was a slight failure in my opinion you needed 3 other friends who were rational people. As most of Co-Op Ended with Trolls who just wanted to slaughter everything instead of sneak. Would I like to see it continue in Assassin Creed Games? Yes

I feel like adding in a few new elements, a new storyline and a new location for us to explore will keep the franchise alive for years to come. Honestly I don’t know of any other game company who creates worlds as massive as AC other than bethesda (and they have plenty of bugs as well)

But again I am a loyal AC player I find few games who can hold my attention as long as AC does.

  10. Also can’t imagine how Uplay could benefit their bank account. It’s an annoying service you have to run on top of Steam – are they going to try to make something like Origin or what?
