You don't necessarily need an ultra high-end motherboard to achieve a great overclock. This was proven by OC team ‘The Overclocking Knights' this week, who used MSI's Z170A Gaming M7 motherboard to push an Intel Core i7 6700K all the way to 6744MHz (6.74GHz), breaking the PiFast World Record. The team also managed to hit 1st place in the Cinebench R15 benchmark too.
The 1423 CineBench score was acheived using a Core i7 6700K running at 6.36Ghz using liquid nitrogen cooling. Unfortunately, at the time of this post going live, this particular score has already been beaten. While the CineBench first place rank may have been short lived, the Overclocking Knights still hold the world record with its 6.74 GHz Core i7 6700K overclock. This astonishing frequency was also achieved using liquid nitrogen cooling.
These are pretty huge results that will likely impress most overclocking enthusiasts.

KitGuru Says: Getting a Core i7 to run at that frequency is no easy feat so these results are very impressive indeed. How important is overclocking to you? Does overclocking potential factor in to your motherboard purchases?
Ha! That’s my board & proc – I love it! 6.74GHz? INSANITY!
Is this legit? They’re claiming 6998.9Mhz.

I can’t wait for the tech to get made that will allow us to actually play games with LN2 cooled cpus/gpus.
