The iPhone 6s is close to waterproof and Apple didn’t tell anyone

Over the last year or two, water resistance and dust proof ratings have become an increasing selling point with some smartphones. Last month, Apple revealed the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, each with a slew of new features over last year's models. However, one thing that wasn't mentioned was that Apple has practically made the iPhone 6s waterproof.

The discovery was made by iFixit during one of its popular product tear downs, which help rate how easy it is to fix a specific device. Both the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus feature new technology that make them more resistant to liquid damage than past models.

Apple has packed a new gasket around the sides of the iPhone 6s and encased every cable and connector on the iPhone's logic board with waterproof material for extra protection, which is a pretty good solution considering that other manufacturers tend to focus on the device's ports.

While Samsung and Sony have previously championed water resistance features in the past, Apple has been very quiet on the subject, likely in an effort to not raise consumer expectations. Obviously you shouldn't be taking your smartphone in to the shower, or over exposing it to water, but it is good to know that your iPhone will be protected should you be out in the rain.

KitGuru Says: Apple usually champions any feat of engineering, heck, it made a huge deal out of last year's iPad Air 2, which was slightly thinner than a pencil. However, it does make sense for the company to not raise expectations. The last thing Apple needs is for people to think that they can now go around dunking their iPhones in water.

  1. Too bad Samsung only made the S5 waterproof. Would’ve been great if my S6 was waterproof.

  2. Søren Chr. Nielsen

Yeah and it seems especially odd that they didn’t do this for the S6, as they decided to go with a “closed” device this time. 😮

  3. “KitGuru Says: Apple usually champions any feat of engineering”

How much did they pay you to write that?

Water “RESISTANT”… Waterproof and Water Resistant have different IP certifications…

  5. Says the one with the AMD logo as a profile picture.

  6. the xperia compact is the best smartphone ever anyways. There is no competition.

  7. You can check the S6 Active for water resistance

  8. Says the one with no profile picture.

    Your point is?

  9. Andrew Nabil Youssef

    But it’s true lol

  10. Sorry, the irony is probably too hard to grasp for you. Don’t mention it buddy! I did not try to make a point.

  11. You upvoting your own comments is also kind of ironic…

My AMD logo has nothing to do with this article about an Apple product.

  12. And yeah I’m new to discus and was clicking around a little to check all the options.
Meanwhile you still don’t seem to grasp the irony. Of course AMD has nothing to do with the Article -_-

  13. Just leave him be. He’s probably an idiot that can’t have it when people make fun of him. You should stop talking to him entirely as people who recommended this discussion will get a notification once the discussion is updated (like me)

  14. Is that so.. Oops. Sorry?

  15. Its simple really… Apple tried to waterproof, they failed and the phone is only spash resistant, so they might as well dont tell anyone their failure and just sell it like it is… The fact is a 700€ phone should be resistant to the water they found on mars… 😛

  16. I don’t think they’ve ever annouced one of their phones to be water proof. If they decided on fully making it waterproof they will succeed and tell. The iPhone might not rock an octacore processor, 4gb ram and a 4k screen (why the heck would you anyway), but the way it is build is top tier. That’s probably what the kitguru author meant.

  17. I had an Iphone 4, switched for an Galaxy s4 (still have it) and It was the best decision ever…
Iphones are “easyer” to use and have a good build quality (lost in iphone 5, 5c and 5s) but as an “advanced” user, android phones are the way to go…

  18. Well, it looks nice, definitely tougher, but there are three problems: loses the fingerprint scanner and capacitive buttons, speaker on the back and not available in my country.

  19. Seriously? Are you seriously suggesting that Apple would pay anyone to write a post that maybe a few thousand people read? Actually pay someone to promote their products? Are you a 12 year old by any chance?

  20. There is a company in US which specializes in waterproofing all sorts of digital devices and I think Apple might have attempted to purchase it a while ago. Apparently it is some sort of a sealant which covers all the electronics inside and on the outside. I think it is slowly moving towards the era where all devices will be waterproof. Apple is obviously not mentioning anything because they don’t want people to suddenly think of the device as waterproof or splashproof when in reality it is not there yet. Otherwise it would be another waterproof-gate/splashgate disaster for Apple

  21. I like Apple for what it is. A company with clear goals and fresh mind & approach. With a solid vision as time has proven. While it is not a revolutionary product (what is these days anyway?) but Apple has managed to create the most amazing set of high quality, well thought out products. Apple do take their time to make sure the work they do is of high quality and because of that are always a step behind on features and hardware.
I think a lot of people having hard time realizing that Apple is the only company in the world that cares about the experience of their users. All others are in it purely for profits, simple as that. No, no one is denying that Apple isn’t there to make money, of course they are but that isn’t their main goal.
I like to think of Apple as that handsome high school kid who gets all the attention of all the girls around while all other makers are the bitching, hating losers who hate him (but still try to copy him as much, because dooh!) and wish he never existed because he gets all the pussay.

  22. No it’s not. Apple has thousands, no, probably millions of people who indirectly support them by talking about apple and by making video’s about them. Kitguru as well. They have no reason to spend money in advertising this way. Not anymore. It became an automatic process once they broke through.

  23. It’s a good thing that the guy who wrote this article doesn’t build boats, or work at NASA, for that matter. “We made our next generation crew transport module close to airtight, but we didn’t want to brag about it!”
