AMD said to launch the Radeon R9 380x next week

Last week, we began hearing rumours that AMD was preparing another GPU for launch before Christmas and now it seems that we know exactly when to expect it. Next week, AMD is said to be releasing the new Radeon R9 380x, featuring a fully unlocked Tonga GPU with more stream processors and a performance bump when compared to the R9 380, or even the R9 285, which also used a Tonga chip.

The card will be spec'd out with 2048 stream processors, 128 TMUs and 32 ROPS along with 4GB of video memory. The base core clock is said to be around 1000 MHz, while the memory clock will sit at 5500 MHz.

There is no current word on exact power usage or requirements for the R9 380x, though we do know that the 380 has a TDP of 190w, so expect it to be a tad higher due to the extra horsepower on the card. The current release date appears to be pegged for the 15th of November, with a price tag of $249.99 being pitched, which would put it nicely in the middle of the R9 380 and the R9 390 in terms of price.

This is still classed as rumour and comes from sources speaking with Videocardz, so take from that what you will. Either way, we will find out for sure next week.

KitGuru Says: The AMD R9 380x could end up being a popular card if the price is right. Are any of you looking to buy a mid-range GPU before Christmas?

  1. IDK, will AMD have the volume to have these make a difference? Do we believe they’ve ramp up production on these, are they needing less to fulfill Apple’s need, or have they been financially able to sit on bins of chips, amassing a war chest (I doubt the last). If they have limited volume and $250 MSRP let’s hope AIB customs do go above that, because Nvidia can offer 970’s being they’re “geldings” only 8% bigger at $270 and never even call in a price drop just pull the “in-cart-special”.

I see if 380X AIB’s settle in quickly at $220-230 -AR, its’ just a means to squeeze the 970’s; 380X spar with most pedestrian 970’s customs (those with up to 1260 Boost), while R9 390 continue to take away the top end at $300.

What more often happens… is after Christmas, now with money in hand kids can grab a new GPU and this year there will be plenty of options vying for the mid-range dollars. If this and Crimson Software keep up the momentum till Christmas it could play in AMD’s favor. If it’s about 1080p you ‘need-not’ spend more than $250, if 1440p the 390 is the better choice.

  2. You bring up a good point. Probably took so long for AMD to release these due to not wanting to have lower supply while they give Apple what they purchased. In normal operating circumstances it probably wouldn’t matter so much. However with AMD hurting financially they more than likely had to announce/ship best effort. Whether or not they’ll have enough for demand? Not sure. Their audience is shrinking. Their inability to ship in a timely fashion and keep up with demand have put them in a bad spot PR wise except for a niche audience. I’m hoping to pick one of these up to hold me over for pascal/arctic islands.

  5. How would this card perform compared to a evga 770? I’m looking to upgrade and was wondering if it would be worth it, thanks 🙂
