Samsung may be modifying the Snapdragon 820 due to heat issues

Today, we have a fairly interested rumour to talk about regarding Samsung's future smartphone plans. We already know that Samsung had to ditch the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 due to overheating issues with the Galaxy S6, causing the company to rely on its own Exynos chips. However, it seems that Samsung may be thinking about using the Snapdragon 820 in the Galaxy S7, as long as it can get the temperatures down a bit, according to a new report.

The report comes from Business Korea (via: 9to5Google), which claims that Samsung is facing similar heat issues with the Snapdragon 820. Samsung is apparently in the process of modifying the chip's control program in order to deal with these heat problems, though if that doesn't work, it can always fall back on its own Exynos chips once again.

This isn't an unfamiliar story. Samsung was at one point rumoured to be working on a modified version of the Snapdragon 810 for the Galaxy S6, until legal issues between other phone makers came in to play. Qualcomm has repeatedly denied that the 810 ever even had a heating problem, despite reports to the contrary. Even LG went with the lower end Snapdragon 808 for the LG G4.

All of that aside, this is still rumour. I would be surprised if Samsung stopped using its own Exynos chips in Galaxy devices after the positive reception of the Galaxy S6. Hopefully when the Snapdragon 820 does start rolling out, it will be truly free of the heat problems that the 810 faced.

KitGuru Says: Qualcomm is going to start having issues with phone makers if it can't get its heat management under control on future flagship Snapdragon chips. Do any of you have a Snapdragon 810 device? Have you noticed it running hot at all?

  1. It wouldn’t make sense to go with Qualcomm, they make more money using their own chips.

  4. It still doesn’t make sense, they make more money using their own and create a new market for semiconductors.
