Qualcomm begins showing off the Snapdragon 820

Qualcomm has officially began showing off the Snapdragon 820 SoC, which will likely appear in many of next year's flagship Android smartphones. The chip succeeds from the Snapdragon 810, which was criticised for its poor heat management and power draw. This time around, Qualcomm has focussed on this area a bit more, making the 820 40 percent more energy efficient.

The chip also aims to be about 40 percent more powerful than the last chip too, so in all, it seems like a pretty big step up. According to Qualcomm, there are already over 60 different chip designs being created.

The new chip uses Qualcomm's own 64-bit Kyro CPU along with an Adreno 530 GPU to ensure high levels of performance. This is also Qualcomm's first chip to use the 14nm manufacturing process, so the chip maker has been making advancements in all areas.

The chip will begin its début in Android smartphones next year. We have already heard rumours of Samsung looking to use it, though the rumour also claims that the company continues to have heat and power draw concerns. Either way, we will find out for sure as new smartphones begin to pop up in 2016.

KitGuru Says: Hopefully Qualcomm will have made the necessary improvements following on from the Snapdragon 810, which saw Samsung switch to its own chips entirely and flagship devices from the likes of LG opt for a less powerful chip. Are any of you running a Snapdragon 810 powered device? Have you had any issues with it?

  2. Nice, looking forward into better heated competition, as Intel can”t put a dent on there.

Better “heated” competition? I find it pretty difficult to beat the 810 in that sense.
