The launch of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 introduced the concepts of achievements and trophies respectively. While PlayStation’s trophies have managed to hook in quite a few platinum hunters, Xbox’s achievement system has fallen out of relevance in recent years. With that in mind, Microsoft is reportedly prepping to release an ‘overhaul’ to the system some time this year.
As reported by known industry insider Shpeshal Nick during the XboxEra podcast, Xbox’s previously-rumoured achievement overhaul looks set to go live sometime this year, with Nick stating:
“What I’m hearing is that Xbox are nearly done with their achievement overhaul with changes to achievements” claiming it to be arriving some time in 2024. Adding to this, Nick continued, “we should be at the very least being shown it, because you know how sometimes they put stuff in beta and then it goes through different rings so it might be one of those things that makes its way through.”
As mentioned, while PlayStation has managed to maintain its trophy system over the years, leading to many players seeking to ‘Platinum’ a game, Microsoft’s Gamerscore achievement system has struggled somewhat due to its relative complexity.
While we know very little about Xbox’s upcoming overhaul, hopefully the console manufacturer is able to create a compelling achievement system – reviving and revitalising the long-dormant achievement hunters. We will have to wait and see.
