It looks like Blizzard is in-fact planning to bring back some of its classic titles. We have seen HD remakes become a popular option for publishers in recent years and now it seems that Blizzard is planning to bring back the original StarCraft, Diablo II and Warcraft III, according to a recent job listing. The job specifically lists all three of those games returning to glory, with the main responsibilities ranging from making the games run on modern operating systems and implementing new features.
“Compelling stories. Intense multiplayer. Endless replayability. Qualities that made StarCraft, Warcraft III, and Diablo II the titans of their day. Evolving operating systems, hardware, and online services have made them more difficult to be experienced by their loyal followers or reaching a new generation”, the listing reads.
“We’re restoring them to glory, and we need your engineering talents, your passion, and your ability to get tough jobs done. So if you like wearing many hats, know small teams are the most effective, and look forward to challenges that will create millions of new adventures for our players: we would love to hear from you.”
Here's the full list of responsibilities:
- Make gameplay first again on modern operating systems.
- Create conditions for experiences that look as good as they play.
- Own implementation and curation of features new and old.
- Combat hacking to improve multiplayer.
- Diagnose and fix all the things: crashes, deadlocks, overflows, heap corruptions, etc.

KitGuru Says: This is a pretty big announcement from Blizzard, especially considering the popularity of the Warcraft RTS and Diablo II. From the sounds of it, these will be remakes too, rather than basic HD remasters. What do you guys think of this? Would you like to see Blizzard bring back its classic games?
Why not Warcraft II?
My guess is that part 3 led up to the story that allowed for the MMO, therefore, more people are familiar with it.
That said, there were only two races/species in the trailer of the Warcraft movie.
from pcgamer:
Update: In response to my inquiries, Blizzard sent over
the following statement: “We need engineers to help maintain our
legacy games. We have a history of maintaining our games for many
years. Our earlier games are still played and enjoyed today, so we want
to continue to maintain them for those communities. We don’t have
anything else to share at this time.”
OMG YES. I’m excited to see the rework of war3 and Diablo2. Wanted such a thing to happen for years now.
Started realizing on my last play through of DIablo II some time ago as to how unoptimized it was. Netcode could use some work as well as having some better hardware than when I first started playing FPS didn’t go up much at all. Wonder how much back end work they’ll be putting into it. I just might repurchase these games for old times sake. If the remasters are released as a patch taht would be cool.
Diablo II optimized for multi-core CPUs and DX12, with more native resolution choices? Incredible. I’d buy it.
Makes sense. I guess not a lot of people still play Wacraft II, but then, I would definitely buy it on GOG.
Once in awhile I’ll fire up Tides of Darkness, but mainly for the soundtrack and the cheatcodes, it brings up all kinds of memories, like when I first tried coffee, lol. Whenever I smell it I think of that damn game.
I wonder if these companies would make a unique game that is both RTS and shooter where the player at-will can posses any character and play out the scene, so to speak. It would make sense given MMO popularity as well as satisfying the single-player campaign of older RTS’.
Daboo!
